Hi to everybody; new member with a question! I have a three-week-old sow, and have noticed over the past week four small deposits of a dried, white film in her cage; two in her hidey-hole, two in her food container. There might also have been others absorbed into the bedding that I did not notice. I thought this might be vomit, as I have never encountered it before, or perhaps something to do with her sex, as this is my first sow (I have kept three boars in the past) but am concerned. Esther, my sow, appears to be otherwise in perfect health, with clear eyes and an alert, attentive attitude. She has tamed easily and has a healthy appetite, so I am at a loss as to what this might be.

I checked guinealynx.com for resources, but can find nothing on vomit - do guinea pigs even throw up? - or any information on such an occurrence. I also cannot log into their forums to ask there, as I use a University Internet service, and they don't give you with an ISP-provided e-mail address, which guinealynx forum registration requires. So I was wondering if anybody here has ever come across anything like this, and, if so, if they could possibly shed some light on the subject. I'm getting worried!

thats happened to me before. My youngest was eating to fast and would puke it up nothing really you can do If that is it . Mine learnt after a month or so

Guinea pigs can't vomit - it's definitely not that. However they can hold small amounts of food/ drink in their mouth, which they can later spit up.

It's unlikely given her age, but the only thing I can think of is that perhaps it's calcium deposits from her urine? That can create a chalky residue. Try putting her on a towel until you see her pee, or until it appears, so you can see where it's coming from.

I would take a sample of the white film along with your piggy to the vet for a check up. If it could possible be some kind of discharge, then you don't want to wait around thinking about what it could be - she'll need proper medical attention.

Is she still with mum? You say you've had her for a week, but she's three weeks old which means she must have been separated extremely early. If you have her and mum, then are you sure it's coming from the baby and not mum?

Good luck.

three weeks is the time that you are supposed to seperate then from mom.my vet said so. they become sexually mature at three weeks of age and that can be a bad thing.
