my cavy, patches, recent got a URI, and now i have him on antibiotics for two weeks.

my problem is that sometimes he goes straight for his medicine(a cherry solution) and wolf's it down. but just today i had to forcefeed it to him (a two person job).

does anybody know why he has this change in attitude?

is there any way to coerce him to drink it willingly?

thanks

I've never had to feed a guinea pig medicine. But I had to give my daughter cherry-flavored antibiotics once and she hated it. The only way I could get her to take it was to give several sugary treats immediately before and after to disguise the taste. Maybe it's possible to trick a guinea pig too (with veggies), I'm not sure. My doctor suggested mixing the antibiotics into chocolate syrup (not safe for guinea pigs!). Maybe there's some liquid that's safe for guinea pigs that the antibiotics could be mixed with. Good luck!

Other than that, https://guinealynx.info/medications.html#dosing has a way to force-feed with just 1 person.

thanks, i'll give that method a try.

it is already mixed in with a cherry flavored solution. but he still doesnt like it

Yes, the cherry flavored solution is not tasty. I'm not sure about the medicine you got, but the one I got was pumped full of sugar too (to preserve the solution, not because that much sugar tastes good). You might be able to ask the vet if there is a different flavor available.

Try letting your pig lick it off a spoon. I hear that works too.

Have a look at this page for advice https://www.guinealynx.info/medications.html#dosing. Mine have never been given flavoured medications so it's always a case of making them take it. If you get a good technique going, it only takes a couple of seconds and really isn't stressful for them.

I think Guinea Girl is in trouble again. Yesterday she seemed fine today she is squeeking when she poops, and is peeing frequently. I am going to a different vet this time and want a list of meds. to give her. I can't find the one I had copied off before so could someone help me as where to go to get the list?

Thanks

Carol, The link in the post just above yours is an excellent source. It has different medications seperated into categories. You will most likely find what you need there on guinealynx.

Guinea Girl has been added to my list of prayers. Hope you find a more knowledgable vet and that your girl gets better.

I couldn't get her in to see the other vet he is out of town until Mon. and sent me back to the one I had gone to before. He gave her a shot of Vit. C. No x-ray or urine test. He said he could not feel any stones He recomended I give her baking powder. well I am still researching all this, I just don't feel like he is doing much good. There is another vet in town but he was out on a call and wouldn't be back until after hours. Help me find what I need to get her well. rhe is having rusty color stools but it only shows up about 10 min. after she pees, at first it is clear.

In the post above I meant to say rusty color pee, not stools. I have lost it.
Thanks.

So she's peeing clear and it's turning rust colored after 10 minutes or so? That part sounds normal because pee will oxidize when air hits it.

Questions:
Is she still squeaking in pain when pooing?
What size and shape are her poos?
Do they look like the ones she made when she was fine?
Is she still peeing frequently?
Is the pee still clear?
Is she eating normally?
What is she eating?
Is she drinking normally or more than normal?
Is there any other odd behavior you have noticed?

Sorry for all the questions but to help you I have to have more of an idea of what is going on.

Please don't give her baking powder. That doesn't sound like a good cavy vet. Is she still squeaking? Was the AB Baytril? Some pigs don't tolerate it.

I'd say a urinalysis or x-ray is in order.
