Can you use mattress pads in place of uhaul pads?

Yes I've heard people say they use mattress pads than uhaul. It depends on what you can get a hold of. I would try multiple things and find out what is better for you.

I bought a mattress pad from goodwill today. Im going to see how it works.

I use mattress pads. I sew anti pill fleece on top of the mattress pad and it works like a charm! Just make sure you have it absorbent side up.
