I would like to try to make a quilt with either:

1 Fleece & matress pad, or
2 Fleece & batting material

Has anyone got experience with either or both of these options and what works best?

Are matress pads the same as matress covers (i'm in Canada)?

Suggestions would be appreciated!

Either would work fine. Mattress pads are basically batting with a cotton or cotton blend cover. Mattress covers protect a mattress and would not be the same thing as a mattress pad. I'd either use mattress pads if it's 100% cotton or close to 100%, cotton batting but not polyester batting or uhaul pads which are 100% recycled cotton denim. Don't use towels in fleece pads because they don't dry well in between the fleece.

I prefer the mattress pad over batting as you can sew it onto the sheet of fleece, and not have to worry about it getting everywhere and folding weird. I don't know how you would keep the batting neat, or how you would wash it effectively.
