Hey guys. Well, I've had a guinea named Moo since January & have wanted to get him a friend for some time. First I waited until their was more space, and I finally got that in May. Then a friend of mine got a couple guinea pigs & found out that one of them was pregnant ... she told me I could have one of the male babies.

Well my friend finally called me and told me they were 2.5 months old & I could come get the one I wanted - two of which she claimed were males (supposedly sexed by a pet store). I took one of them 3 weeks ago, quarantined it, and I have also been trying to sex it the whole while. It's so little so it's hard to sex ... I've checked many many websites.

Well, yesterday I finally went on with an introduction hoping that perhaps my male could help me out to sex it (by seeing how he reacted around him/her). I introduced them in a neutral territory, they had been both bathed earlier in the week, and my male was very interested in the new one. He sniffed her behind mostly, and also tried to mount (I didn't allow that). The new one pee'd and after I took it out my male wouldn't leave the spot he/she pee'd in.

I'm concerned it's a female ... any ideas of what to do? And also, if it is a female, would anyone suggest neutering or spaying? On average what does that cost?

Do you have an exotic vet? If you're really unsure about the sex, have a cavy savvy vet sex the pig for you.

Males mount the other guinea pig despite whether it's male or female. It's a dominance issue and I would consider something wrong if a male didn't mount a new guinea pig. However if you aren't certain I would try to get the new one sexed before your thread joins the rest of the pregnancy and birth threads.

If your vet says its a female, i would nuter the male , its much less risky then spaying a female.

Please do not interfere with the mounting if you have sexed it as a male.

they have great pictures of g-pigs. It will make it easier for you to sex your pig. If still in doubt, take it to the vet. DO NOT put them together (even for a minute) till you are 100% about the sex of both pigs. 2 1/2 months old is way to young for a pigger to get preg. Not to mentoin the other bad things that go along with breeding. good luck. :0)

It's hard to tell from your photos. Have you tried pushing just above the genitals to get a penis to pop out? Also if you feel around in the same area you should be able to feel the ridge/shaft of the penis just under the skin.

Have to agree looks female but push above the genitals like Ly says. Even if a penis doesn't pop out you can often feel whether there's a solid smooth bone for females or a bump for the male's penis.
