Upper Levels Make upper level more sturdy?

Hello everybody! Today I think I finally settled on a design for my C&C. It's a 4x3 with a loft all the way around except right in the middle. I was curious on how I could make the top level more sturdy. I was thinking of using a closet rod and cutting it and zip tying it on to add support. I don't want to use grids because I want to leave the bottom as open as possible. I currently am using two grids in the middle and it is supported quite well except the side with the ramp. Any suggestions?

Closet rod will work. 2x2 lumbers would probably be cheaper though.

Thank you! That will be perfect. I didn't even think of putting them horizontally. I'll have to go pick up some 2x2's tomorrow!

I used L shaped shelf brackets on mine and it works.

So ironic ... I just completed the framework for my multi-level C&C cage last evening, and the middle part of the top level is sagging a bit. So this thread topic is very timely.

Closet rod will work. 2x2 lumbers would probably be cheaper though.

So a 2x2 piece of lumber will fit within the grid square(s)?
At least, that's how it looks within your photo.

Yes, a 2x2 lumber is actually 1.5x1.5 inches. The 2x2 was the measurement when they cut the wood and haven't dried them.

The 2x2's worked great. I just finished up my cage and the top level is sturdy as can be. Plus, it only cost me a little over 2$ Thank you lissie!

I went and got myself a 2x2 as well .... the ends don't seem to fit within the grid squares as I thought they would, but I measured it out and had it cut such that it wedges nicely - without significantly bending out the side grids.
