Lucerne is alfalfa, so it has too much calciium in it for adult pigs. I'd keep looking for something else.

There aren't really anymore types of pellets, excluding Timothy based pellets which are far too expensive and Lucerne pellets are really the only types of pellets I've been able to find.

Timothy based pellets won't be nearly as expensive as the vet bills you may wind up with by feeding alfalfa pellets to adult guinea pigs.

But you can go without pellets. You just need to make sure they're getting a very good varied vegetable diet.

I will keep that in mind and I might try the pellet free diet.

Google "HAFF diet" (without the quotes) and you'll get some examples. HAFF stands for "hay and fresh foods."

How many guinea pigs do you have? I feed Oxbow to my two girls and, on a per day basis, it costs me less than 50c. The initial cost might be a bit scary but the savings long term are worth it.

I firmly believe that Caramel's chronic stone/sludge/UTI issue was caused by poor diet in the first few years (Peters food, and then Lucerne pellets before switching to Oxbow when she was about 2 and a bit). I spent $3000 in a year trying to 'cure' her issue before the last stone ruptured her Urethra. Spending $30 on a bag of pellets every 6 weeks is cheap in comparison.

I'm not really sure whether i should use the HAFF diet or if i should only feed them oxbow pellets but i might try giving them cavy cuisine pellets every second day and giving veggies more frequently to make up for the lack of pellets, so that it's both financially managable and healthy for my piggies.
