So Im making my piggies new cage this weekend. I was planning to make a 2x5 cage with a no ramp loft, as my pigs like to jump. Like this:Crafts, Cavies, Contras and Confections: No-Ramp Loft or should I make a 2x6? Your opinions. I have 3 sows.

ETA If I made the 2x6 I could possibly put the loft on the side?

If you have space or 2x6, then go for the 2x6.

I would go with the 2x6 so they have more room to run and play.. I had a 1x2 loft and my girls always seemed in each others way.. Rumbling like crazy.. Lol I have now extended my loft to a 2x3 and no more rumbling.. Yay!! You can always add a loft later and be able to give the the sq ft now :)

Thanks! We are painting the room this weekend so I will build the cage over the week. I hope the stand will be able to fit the 2x6

If you want to add loft, you can also do it this way. It only takes 2 more grids and the pigs can jump up and down.

Thank you for the idea! I like that! It looks easier to build! How did you build the loft?

Just zip tie 2 grids together and zip tie all around the outer grids. I use lots of zip ties.

Thank you so much. Ill let you know how the cage turns out! :) It will save me grids too! The other one required 10 grids and Id have to cut them all!

I dispise lofts. I have tried a number of different kinds including Lissie's and I could never get all the poops, pee and crud out to my liking.

You should do a 2x6 regardless for 3 piggies. The more space the better and the easier it is to clean.

I don't get it why people don't like lofts? Lofts add an extra dimension to a cage with more variety, and the cavies get lots of exercise going up and down the ramp. Mine get far more than they would with just one level. My loft is the kitten/litter area and the rest of the cage is kept relatively clean as a result of that....far less work.

Here's a link to my cage:

(broken link removed)

I have oh, so little room for a cage, but am planning to enlarge the current 2x4 to a 2x5 and make a small change in the loft. Both the kids seem to want to be in the loft and litter box at the same time, and Chester hogs the box, so Maya is left to leave me presents just outside the box. I think if I enlarge it just one grid, it will work for them.

IMHO........the key to this whole process is to carefully plan out your design, spend the time to do it right, and make the cage sturdy and secure.

I love you cage and fleece!!, My pigs wont use ramps so thats why im going to make it a no-ramp loft. The cage will be on a folding table

The problem with lofts is that they are usually not very large, and unless you have pigs that get along really well (and even then) there can be conflict when both are trying to use the loft at once. I find males, especially, tend to trap each other.

I was going to use the loft to put a cozy bed up there, the food/kitchen is on the bottom level.

So update. We are going on vacation on July 22 till 28, my brothers girlfriend will be watching the pigs, we cant get me moved into my new room before that, so we cant put the new 2x6 in till we move, but I can squeeze in a 2x5 cage, will they be okay in that for a week with no floor time?

I love your cage so much! But my piggies refuse to use a ramp. We tried showing them, they just looked at us like we were crazy

I had to bend grids over the top so they felt secure.. Now I just have the one on the top high part.. And veggies up the ramp so they got the idea :) now they run up and down like spazes .. Lol

That is what we did, they just tried to jump off the loft. My lilly can clear a 14in grid if she puts her mind to it. We found her one day under my bed and we got her out and she jumped right back into her playpen!
