Local PetLand Animal Housing in store

I was recently at the mall and my friends wanted to go to the pet store to look at the fish. I walked in only to notice a guinea pig in a 4 by 4 tank type thing with about 10 rabbits? I also noticed that the dwarf hamsters and mice were together. Is it just me or am I almost positve different types of animals can be together for health reasons and expecially the food they eat. Is there any way I can report this to an orginization that will have this fixed, or even the store shut down? Thank you

I believe we had a pet store like this in our mall. All kinds of animals put together that shouldn't have been. Puppy's from puppy mills. And some glass tanks. I don't know if someone reported them or not, but not to long afterwards they were shut down. I would report them.

For some reason the myth persists that guinea pigs and rabbits make great cage mates. I suppose the reasoning behind this is that they will be each other's company without the threat of breeding. Less knowledgeable people may think that their dietary needs are the same, so they can be fed the same crappy seed mix and hay.
Fact is that guinea pigs unlike other small animals are very docile and can easily be attacked by rabbits or rats when kept together. Also, rabbits have very strong legs that can seriously injure if not kill a guinea pig if it were to be kicked.

Also, they are two completely different animals, saying they could be mates is like expecting a Chinese and a Russian person to have a great conversation. They are both human, right?

If i were you, I would report the to the local SPCA, they may not do anything immediately, but if enough complaints come in, something will be done.

Thank you both! I just hate to see what goes on in pet stores. Its truly awful. From the care of the animals to the over population. The puppys in the tanks are ridiclous and the over population of cats isnt any better.

Would it help if I went back up there and took pictures of the animals housed together for the ASPCA to see?

I went to Petland a few days ago and looked at the piggies. They had a terribly small cage and there water dish was filled with bedding and poo. So I went to go get my food and stuff for my first piggies. The other people in the isle asked me what animal I was buying for. I said I was getting 2 guinea pigs in a week. The woman asked me what food I use. I told her to buy Oxbow cavy performance (her pigs were 3 months) and Oxbow hay. I felt proud that I was helping her and her piggies health instead of some other crappy brand.

But you still support them by shopping there?

I believe PetLand is one of the worst offenders, and they have been shut down numerous times.

I really wish I didn't shop there but there is no pet stores in my city that doesn't sell animals :weepy:. and the one closest to me (only sells fish and ferrets) doesn't have Oxbow.

My friends friend said that she was at petland and they were about to play with a dog and they went to the back when they weren't supposed too and saw 3 DEAD dogs! they were dead. they were on the floor DEAD. I didn't know this till about a week ago but this is just terrible. they keep the poor dogs in those teeny cages feed them the most unhealthiest cheapest food you can find. I would most definately report it but I don't know how. I can't report what my friends friend saw because I'm not the one who saw it.

Thats awful. But it is a petstore, so I can't say it doesn't surprise me. Have her report them to the SPCA.

I was exaggerating a little what I meant was cheap unhealthy food like purina and pedigree and iams etc. look up the ingredients in those and see what I mean.

And then there's Beneful, Eukanuba, Kibbles & Bits, and Royal Canin. All brands that are mass-marketed as the top of the line, but they receive one star ratings all around. Sorry, the whole dog food thing really ticks me off.
