I'm thinking of training my cavies to use a litter box and I was wondering, could I use like a small cat litter box with kitty litter in it or would I use something else with bedding? I'm not sure. Any suggestions would help!

any one?? I really need help!

NO CAT LITTER!! cat litter tends to clump when wet. im sure you can only image what happens if your piggie were to injest some. because guinea pigs are naturally curious and will almost try anything, the cat litter is a huge nono because if eaten, it will clump up inside them and will most likely cause blockage.

using regular bedding is fine.

yeah that's what I thought but I've never potty trained any cavies before so I was clueless...

I have a small kitty litter pan in my girls cage and what I did was put a layer of kiln dried pine in the bottom then on top of that I put a layer of newspaper then some hay on top of that. My girls do use it although not exclusively. But with the newspaper and hay on top I can easily change that out everyday and clean any wet spots in the under layer of pine without having to dump the entire thing every day.

The reason I put the newspaper and kiln dried pine as a top layer is because I bed them on fleece and they were kicking too much of the pine all over the fleece (and its hard to get bits of pine off the fleece) so now the pine is under for absorbancy and they can't kick it out anywhere. I throw poops over in the litter pan when I spot clean and that helps them to learn that is a potty box. Although they love to get in there and eat the fresh hay when I change the top layer.
