Keeping Cool Let's talk ice packs

@AnnikasMommy, they can die of heat stroke at 85 degrees, and are definitely in uncomfortable range around 80, or even less.

Thank you for the info bpatters, I thought I heard anything over 80 was a no no. Due to my working conditions my house has to be cool when I get home or else I'm grumpy so the boys should be comfortable for life. :)

Thanks for the info. on the non-window units! I was worried sick when we had the air go out; we had the alternative of our neighbor's house, but that might not always be available. I think it's time to invest in one of those units for the pet room. It sounds like it might also work if we had to put the animals in the garage in emergency circumstances. That's not likely, but you never know what could happen in the house, and I always like to be fully prepared.

We've had more than one multi-day outage when the temperature was in the 90's. We moved the guinea pigs to our lower level. It's not a basement but partially below ground because it's the bottom level of our split level. Our family room is down there and it has a tile floor which feels cold, even in the summer. I put Hefty bags on the floor with fleece pads over them and made temporary cages with the extra grids I have. They were fine down there; better than the rest of us upstairs.... ha ha My husband slept on the couch down there with them....

I have a friend that's going to look at our duct work and see about adding a vent to that space. I'm also thinking about having my husband cut the bedroom doors into Dutch doors. That way, we can leave the top sections open so the a/c from my daughters rooms can circulate out but our dog can't get into the bedrooms. My oldest has a rabbit and my middle daughter....well her room is just a mess so I'm afraid the dog will eat something, or break a leg...lol. I forgot all about the rolling non window a/c units! Maybe I'll look for one of those. Thanks for all the great info! You guys rock as always!

What is a rolling non window a/c unit? Can someone post a link to an example?

If you go to the Home Depot site they have them on there. They start about $250 and a friend of mine uses them during hurricane season.

Home Depot appears to have a good selection. All the ones I looked at say they need to vent through a window, so I'd likely just set the girls up in the garage with it (HOA is a pain in the butt, but garage window is mostly hidden from view by our fence).
