Hay Kms third cut timothy - not what I expected

So I orderd some of Kleen Mama's third cut timothy hay not too long ago because I've heard it's one of the best and that it's one of the only places you can get third cut online. Now I have heard and read on the kms website that their third cut was supposed to be fresh, and green and almost all leaf and little to no stem. I have ordered their second cut hay twice and was pretty impressed at how soft it was for second cut so I thought that if their second cut was this good then their thrid cut must be even softer and nicer. I ordered nine pounds of the third cut and I have to say while it is very green and fresh it has a fair amount of stem and seems more like the second cut I would by from the petstore. They do eat it so I'm going to use up what I bought and maybe just switch to oxbow's orchard grass since that I am very happy with and is very soft much like I thought the kms hay would be. Would that be ok to do or do piggies need the timothy? and has anyone else gotten third cut that's like this? I checked the lable to make sure they didn't send me second cut by accident and it said third cut.

No, they don't need to have timothy hay. Just orchard grass would be fine. It just needs to be a grass hay. There is more info about it here, and a chart.

What you've got is fine, but if you weren't happy with KM's hay, I'd email them and see if there's a problem. They're usually very responsive to inquiries by customers.

The last shipment of Oxbow Orchard Grass that I ordered was not as nice as the ones I always get from them. I had also bought two bales of hay locally the end of the summer and neither of them were very nice. I think the dry summer led to less than nice hay and grass crops this year. The funny thing is, my pigs like this last batch of orchard grass than the one before that. I had some of the last order left and offered them both of them. They liked the stemmy one better than the green, leafier one. Go figure.....

That is unfortunate about your batch of 3rd cut... mine barely has any seed heads and is very soft, though the blades are not as long as I had imagined they would be. KMS bluegrass is very soft, green, and very long blades, another great hay alternative if you ever choose to try them again.

my box of 3rd cut has also been very good...very soft, little to no hard pieces, and few seed heads though my pigs like those.

maybe you should contact KM and see if anything thing can be done

Thank you all for your helpful replies. My pigs do like the seed heads it's just the hard stiff stem pieces that they don't really enjoy. They clear their hay rack when I feed the oxbow orchard grass though so I'm guessing that's their favorite. I didn't look like I could order off of oxbows website so where would I be able to order about 5 - 9 pounds of the oxbow hay? I'm currently getting it from the petstore but the bags they have don't last very long.
