I am switching my pigs' pellets from Hartz Original Recipe (pellets only) to Kaytee Timothy Complete now that my pigs have grown. Kaytee has Ethoxyquin in it but all the other foods are alfalfa based. Mazuri has Ethoxyquin and is much more expensive. Is the Kaytee OK? I don't want to pay for shipping for Oxbow.

do you have a petco near you?

How old are your pigs? Have you tried the Oxbow locator?

I know slap but petco sells oxbow I think if worst comes to worst that is an option

Petco does not sell Oxbow.

I heard they did. Sorry!

Vets sometimes sell Oxbow. That's where I get mine.

I get mine from a feed supply store and (broken link removed). Buying two 10lb bags including shipping is cheaper than the supply store I go too.

Since I live in Canada shipping costs more then the darned product itself. I only order things I absolutely can't buy over here, (Like Japanese books and DVDs :) )

Our petco does not sell Oxbow. I live in a small town in NM and NO store sells only pet supplies except one. (that includes the big city and small towns near me) That one sells junk, unfortunately, and nothing for pigs I don't have already or need. I'll look into The Critter Store, though. I even looked online for places that sell Oxbow in my area and only two came up. The one I can get to did NOT sell oxbow and never did according to them, so someone has their facts askew. The other is nowhere in driving distance enough to make the trip worth it.

Petco doesn't sell Oxbow. They usually only have cruddy products. You can eliminate pellets from their diet. Just up the hay and veggies. They may lose a few ounces in the beginning, but it works. They don't really need pellets.

They don't need pellets? I thought they were suppose to have 1/8-1/4 cup per day.

No, they don't need pellets. My cavies do not get pellets and haven't for over a year and they are the healthiest they have been. Pellets have only been around for 30 years or so, much like dog food. Pellets were only started for labs as a easy way to make sure their animals were getting all the nutrients they needed.

When my grandmother owned cavies, there was no such thing as pellets. Their pigs lived off grass, hay and vegetables, much like cavies in the wild.

Well Hello Ziggy. I am also from NM and having the same problem as you. Kaytee has come out with a new product that is alfalfa based pellets with no junk added to them. I found them at petco. I haven't gotten any yet since I still have some left over. There is no corn listed on the ingredents list either.
And just to do a little bit of a back you up. Finding things in NM is very difficult. Things are not as easliy avaliable here. I seen on the site for Oxbow in Albq., but when I went to that store they didnt carry it. That was a wasted 4hr drive. I can't seem to get the vets or local stores to order any either. I have also found out that petco has the best hay in town. I wont buy from local feed stores because of all the chemicals that end up in the hay.

Living with no pellets is acctually healthier than with. Pellets can cause bladder sludge and obesity, which can lead to impaction.

Well, maybe I'll cut back on Percy's pellets and add more veggies and possibly a second small hayrack. He doesn't seem to like the Oxbox Cavy Cuisine that I bought him as well as the Kaytee Timothy Complete that I had him on before anyway.

Does Percy get a couple handfulls of loose hay to play in? All pigs love that.

Percy gets some to play in, to eat, to sleep on. He pulls it out of his TP roll and tosses that all over the cage and stands on his hind legs to eat out of the top of the hayrack as well. Percival LOVES his hay! I was considering a second rack to supplement his diet since that seems to stay at least a bit cleaner than the hay that ends up on the cage floor.

So as not to monopolize this thread: I found the prices for the Oxbow pellets, toys, etc. on (broken link removed) to be pretty reasonible. The Oxbow looks SO much better than the Kaytee I was feeding. It even smells a bit better, but then again, I'm starting to like the scent of fresh hay!

Mazuri (what I looked up from) does not have ethyoxquin (sp?), but has disgusting things in it like Fish and meat, which isn't good at all. Are you sure you can't afford $35 of Oxbow pellets? If you go to www.critterstore.com you get shipping free over $35 worth of stuff.
