Hi, i'm a new owner (about 2 weeks now) and i just want to make shure i'm reading my piggie's signs rite...

He likes to whistle a lot when i get home and when he sees/hears me or my roomate, is that normal? i talk to him when he whistles and i whistle back and we can keep going for a long time doing that... also when i talk to him he usually makes squeaky noises and makes little jumps and runs really fast arround his cage... does that mean he likes it?

Finally, when i pet him he makes this really cute noise, in lack of a better description, sounds a little like a machinegun... I'm guessing he likes that rite?

Thanx!

Sounds like your pig likes you alot. When you talk to him and he does "little jumps" that means he is extremely happy. It also sounds like he's happy to see you when you get home, sqeaking for you, which I LOVE when my pigs do that!!
The "machine gun" sound, on the other hand, I think means he is not liking being touched there (I'll bet its on his back). One of my girls does that because she doesn't like to be touched on her back. Does he kind of do a mild shaking when he makes the sound? Mine did it at first because she had mites and it made her hurt to be petted on her back. Out of curiosity, where did you buy/acquire him from?

The really loud wheeks are to get your attention. Usually so you can feed them. If you talk back to them they know they got your attention and go nuts either begging for food or for someone to come play with them. Try talking back to 9 of them and see if you can still hear a few minutes later. lol He could be lonely though. Guinea pigs are herd animals and very social. They really need to be kept as at least a pair but love large groups provided there is enough cage space. Single pigs tend to yell for attention alot, get scared more often, are less active(no one to play with), and don't always eat as much or as much variety of foods. http://cavyspirit.com/sociallife.htm

I got him in a pet store Piggie Mamma, unfortunately there are no adoption centers here in Cancun (or in Mexico for that matter).
Today when i shower him i'm gonna have his routine checkup so i'll check for mites. About the machinegun sound... he does do that when i brush his "Knots" of hair on the sides, so he migth be unconfortable then...
Thanx a lot for the info!
By the way, I'm thinking of getting him a buddie, but i just want to get used to cleaning the cage, feeding him and all that before getting another "son" :p

Brushing their hair up the wrong way almost always makes the pigs go "drrr" like a machine-gun. It means they do not like what you are doing. The same with the hair knots thing.

Pigs aren't lone creatures. They are extremely social and should really have one or two buddies, either of the same sex or neutered opposite sex. So if you have one intact (fertile) male pig, you could either get a spayed female, or another male. If you have an intact female, you could get another female or a neutered male. www.petfinder.com lists homeless piggies in your area.
