Hello could anyone in Australia offer help for our piggy Jessie? She has had months of abscesses in the cheek and last week it was discovered Jessie has a bad tooth.
This tooth is causing the infection, swelling and inflammation in her mouth and causing/making it hard for her to swallow.
The vet has given us 3 options, 1. surgery-success rate 10%. 2. PTS. 3. leave as is and she will slowly starve.
I am not sure if we can post links from other sites but it really saves me having to retype it all, here is a link to Jessie's thread on Guinea Lynx.
Hoping someone can help. Many thanks.
Oh, yes have X-rays if any one wishes to look.

I don't think of #3 as an option at all.

Its sad to say, but if your vet (is this the only vet available to you? Do you trust this vet?) thinks she only has a 10% chance, I think I would go for option #2. Good luck, it's a hard decision to make.

Thank you for your reply. I do NOT know this vet as my vet referred me down to his surgery.
Like my vet said 10% is better than zero. There is a good vet in the UK and I am hoping this vet will contact him and together they can make a plan to help Jessie.
I mainly wrote this post in the hope that someone could tell me more about the surgery, maybe someone has a vet that would work with this vet(via emails, faxes etc) to help him help Jessie.
For now have decided to go with option one but all will depend on Jessie.
Many thanks and wheeks from Jessie.

Hi there, I am a practice manager at a veterinary clinic in Texas (U.S.) We do not operate on exotics but I do know a VERY good hospital that specializes in exotics. The name of the hospital is Southridge Animal Hospital in Denton Texas. Here is their website. Well here is the information, they appear to currently be in the process of changing their website pages--but normally they have a very nice website. Maybe you could call them & get some advice? If not message me and I will speak to our Doctor. She is SUPER smart & progressive-we just specialize in dog & cats :)

2436 S Interstate 35 E # 370, Denton - (940) 891-0611

By the way--I do not know the effects of sedation/surgery on a GP but we do dentals ALL the time on cats & dogs with 100% success.

Well a lot has happened since my last post, Jessie had the surgery and survived, and for 3 days went really well BUT then it was found her mouth was badly misaligned and we were told by 3 vets her jaw was fractured. We kept up the syringe feeding and slowly Jessie managed to crawl back to 700grams.She then developed motility issues and went onto Methomide for a while. Got her two friends and she really picked up until we tried the chin sling and she got so depressed that we got more X-rays taken which showed she has elongated roots. She got her teeth filed and then the wound area back in June the scab came off and there was pus. Lushed the area and packed with Trisbressian but the smell was bad so took to the vet. She has another abscess which she will have X-rays this Tuesday and surgery after Christmas. We were also hoping for pathology to sample the pus to get correct antibiotic but have heard this can't be done if she is on antibiotics. She is on trisbressian and Flagyl but these don't appear to be working what would you use? Baytril affects her which is why she is not on that.At present Jessie is not pooping so am going to put her onto Protexin and if this doesn't help she will go back onto Methomide.Any advise much appreciated. Also got a PC virus and lost everything including link to this site.

Tribrissen is trimeth sulfa, which usually works well on pus. My vet has cultured pus even if the pig is on antibiotics.
