So just like the title says I'm completely ignorant as to the care of guinea pigs. I'll try to compress the novel into cliffs notes.
3 days ago a friend of ours showed up at the front door. He was carrying a large cardboard box. Inside are 2 adorable little furbaby piggies looking absolutely terrified. My friend has a side job cleaning up rental houses and apt.s for the landlords. He took a job cleaning up a filthy home and found our 2 guys. He also found about 15 dead guinea pigs. I'm not going to go into all the details I'm sure you all can imagine how bad it was. So since I'm a nurse he figures I know how to take care of ANY animal. LOL it doesn't work like that, but, long story short my family and I are now the proud parents and siblings of 2 little pigs. We also have a rescue dog and cat. We've never owned any guinea pigs, I had a hamster as a kid but that's as close as I've been. Let's see, human family is myself, husband and 2 kids ages 15 and 7years old. Gizmo and Gadget are probably around 3 months old (that's just a guess and not even an educated guess)
Now on to the million questions! There's so much conflicting information on the Internet and I absolutely don't want to do something that's going to hurt them.
First off thank God for Amazon prime and overnight shipping.
I have the 2 boys in a midwest habitat cage with a small playpen attached to it to make around 10.5 sqfeet of space. Is this ok? Will it be ok for good or are we going to have to get a bigger cage eventually? I'm still learning and reading on this site and others but I don't want to make any mistakes.
I have a water bottle attached to the side of the cage. You have to push on a little ball to get the water out. I'm afraid they don't know how to use it so there's also a water bowl in the cage. Is there any way to know for sure if they are drinking from the bottle? I've marked the side but the bottle is big so it would take a while for it to show use. I don't want to remove the bowl unless I know for sure they know how to use it. Are there any risks to the water bowl I need to know about? Anything?
There's no small animal vet (that I'm aware of) here in Corpus Christi Texas that is knowledgeable about guinea pigs. If anyone knows of one here or close by I'd really appreciate it!
Any and all advice, tips, tricks, story, or just plain encouragement is very much appreciated!
