just found a local hay farm (YEAH!!), and they sell hay for $7 a bale!! when i saw it, it seemed okay - smelled fresh, seemed pretty green. they guys told me it was timothy with a "teeny" bit of alfalfa in it. they'll have 2nd cut timothy the end of july, early august. they also had a big brown bag (they kind you collect leaves in in the fall) full of orchard hay for $5. i'm very excited about the price and availability. as much as i love KMS, this is local, and less expensive.

but here's my question - is a "teeny" bit of alfalfa mixed in a bad thing? is it something i shouldn't be feeding to my pigs? and how can i tell the difference between timothy and alfalfa (i missed that subject in high school)!

If your pigs aren't stone or sludge prone, then ... Yes. You can pick it out if you're really worried about it and there will no doubt be some folks that come along and disagree with my opinion, which is fine. Alfalfa is flaky and generally has stems in it, whereas grass hay is just pure, strand grass hay.
