I've been trying to weigh my guinea pigs more often that way if an illness comes upon them, I'll know earlier. Anyways, Last month I weighed Brownie and he was 2 lbs and 4 oz. Or 1000 grams. I weighed him a month later and he was 2 lbs, or 800 grams. Is losing 200 grams in one month normal? Should I be worried? I thought this was weird because he has grown so much since I got him and I thought he'd be anything but lighter.
Thunder went from 2 pounds and 14 ounces to 2 pounds and 12 ounces. He lost 100 grams. Is that normal? I may have been feeding them I tiny bit less (about a cup), before I was feeding them about a cup and 2/3rds. Other than that, they are happy, healthy, pooping well, drinking well, playing well, etc....., Being their cute selves! Thunder is definitely on the heavier side though. So cute and chubby! Brownie is definitely not thin but he's definitely not as fat as Thunder!
Brownie's my athletic one :) any help would be appreciated!

Okay, weird news. The last time I weighed them was two weeks ago, just didn't know it was so important so I didn't post it till today. So I weighed them again today and looked at their teeth. (I don't know how to get a look at their molars) any ways, brownie gained back his four ounces. Why? I don't know. It's weird. thunder is still the same. He still has lost 2 ounces but he hasn't lost any more. I will still weigh them every day to make sure their not losing anymore. I'll definitely keep a close watch on Thunder.

Brownie's front teeth looked okay, might need to be trimmed
Thunder's bottom teeth looked long. I think they may need to be trimmed.

I will post the pictures of their teeth later and a video of Thunders teeth(I couldn't get a clear shot so a video was as good as I could do).

No, do NOT trim his front teeth! Unless there's something strange going on with the back teeth, the front teeth should not need to be trimmed. Guinea pigs will wear their teeth down normally, without vet intervention, except in rare instances.

You can't look at his molars, and neither can the vet, unless they use buccal separators to prop the mouth open. X-rays will only give a side view, but can be useful if the molars are overgrown or the roots are elongated. However, they usually can't see a spur that make be making a pig's mouth sore.

If they're not losing any more weight, I'd just watch them carefully and weigh them daily. But if either keeps on losing, a vet visit would be in order.

Just wanted to add that you need to weigh them at the same time each day so your getting a standered weight on them. I think the best time is right before feeding them breakfast. Hope all is going well with your piggies!

Okay, thanks! I think that's a great idea. I will just weigh them daily and keep a close eye on them for any signs of illnesses. I don't think the teeth are a problem right now just need to make sure they get have access to hay 24/7 and not anything less (I would never go lower than a day just sometimes I won't re-fill their hay until evening time feeding comes).

Thank you Hhbean! I actually didn't even think about that so thanks for telling me!

Here are a few images of Thunders teeth (I didn't upload the video yet so sorry for the terrible quality! He wouldn't stop moving!) Lightningpig1 albums thunder new diz picture16445 thunder brownies teeth 003

I just wanted to give you this page link, even though guinea lynx is mainly talking about "broken teeth" it also discusses the length of teeth, teeth trimming ect. and I think you will find it most useful ! I am no dental expert for sure, so I can't comment on whether your piggie's teeth look a bit on the long side or not...sorry. Though your piggie's weight loss is definitely something to keep a very very close eye on.

However, what they say here on the link I am providing you, makes a lot of sense to me. I also think you will really appreciate the consequtive photo's of a piggie's teeth that they provided on here.

I also wanted to back up what bpatters was telling you...and how people (and some ignorant vets too..) can get miss-informed and miss-guided and become obsessed with the length of teeth. ( the incisors)
