Is there a certain amount of piggies you can keep together?

Like say if I dedicated a huge walk in enclosure, I would be able too keep around 100, if the space was big enough?

or does somewhere down the line too many guinea pigs can be too many? like with gerbils?

I do not want to make a big enough enclosure for that, I just want too see if their social behavior is more like gerbils or rats.

I imagine it'd be hard to keep track of their health because it'd take forever to weigh them all. Good luck if you have a mites outbreak and you need to dose every single one.

I don't know if it would work perfectly with all males or all sows. They do have those large herds in the wild, but mostly because they're prey animals.

If you mis sex one, or one has babies and you don't notice then the males impregnate all the sows, you could easily triple the numbers.

I know that, I was talking more along the lines of social aspects rather than health issues.

as I have been told that I should only keep up to six gerbils together, any more they tend to fight.

There are a couple members on the forum with somewhat large herds of sows living together. I have had 5 living together at one time and soon will again (fingers crossed). You can keep more than 6 same sex pigs together.

Yes, if you have the space allowing large numbers of cavies, you can house them together harmoniously. They will work out their pecking order (as with smaller groups) and there will always be the dominant ones in the cage.

I know of a few people who have extremely large enclosures with between 30-40 sows.

I'm planning on having eleven live together. I would have thought it would be very difficult to capture them with a walk in enclosure.

I have five together right now. The only way I would add another would be if it were a baby. I don't want to upset the balance of my pigs.

But just imagin, giving 100 guinea pigs floor time, handeling time, weighing all them, grooming all them, treating them all to the vet, buying food and bedding, having the money to have a nig enough cage? I know people who have 20 and have quite a hard time taking care of them all, 100 would drive me over the edge! and also if your keeping sows together and 1 pig out of the 100 are sexed wrong, he would go around mating with all the sows, = lots a babies! but its up to you, thats jsut my opinion. I personaly would like to have 4 or 5, but thats just me, lol. Good luck with what-ever you choose

I think that if you did not have a job and if you have a steady source of income, you could do it. I would consider taking on 100 pigs a full-time job, plus! If I were to do that, I would recruit several more people to help me out!
There was a thread a while back, and I'm not sure in what area of the forum this was, but the thread was about an animal farm that had like 300 piggies, most all of them in the same enclosure. The thread was about their living conditions and if it was big enough. You could try to search for it. There were pics and everything.

DeadIrish isn't getting or going to have 100 pigs. I believe He/She is merely inquiring to how large of a herd can live together peacefully.
