Diet Is it ok to feed peppers everyday?

Is it okay to feed my pigs green peppers everyday?

I give them each a quarter of a large pepper everyday, and occasionally lettuce and other veges. I have pellets, hay and water aswell.

Was wondering if this is okay? I read a book and it says guinea pigs need lettuce everyday but can't feed lettuce everyday because its too expensive.

Yes! They need alot more than just peppers and lettuce though...
Ly has some veggie charts on here that show everything they can eat in great detail, it's very informative! Green Peppers can be given everyday though as well as Romaine, Green Leaf, and Red Leaf Lettuces. Red and Yellow peppers can be given a few times per week they have more sugar, but the green ones are a big part of Vit C.

But they MUST have at least 1 cup each everyday of mixed vegetables.
Examples: Lettuces, cilantro, bell peppers, cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, baby carrot, etc That's basically what mine get daily.

EDIT: A head of lettuce is about $1.50, not expensive at all, unless you are buying the bagged stuff which has alot of extras they don't need.

Kimberly's advice is great. You can take a look at the veggie charts she mentioned and the sample menus as well. Those will definitely help you with vegetables. When I first started out, these two links were my lifesavers!

One thing I also wanted to add is that cucumbers shouldn't be fed everyday as Kimberly said she feeds. Cucumbers can be fed twice a week (a few slices is good) since they do not have much nutritional value. A few staples to get every time you head to the grocery store include lettuces (red leaf, green leaf, romaine, endive, escarole), cilantro and green or yellow bell peppers (the red ones can be fed once or twice a week as a treat - high sugar).

Cucumbers can be fed twice a week (a few slices is good) since they do not have much nutritional value.

They can be fed every 2 to 3 days, (about 2 1/4" thick slices). If they were a twice a week food, they'd be in a different category on my charts.

LOL funny you should ask! I had a green pepper in the fridge for my piggies and would rip a couple of chunks daily for the them. Then one morning I went into the fridge and the pepper was gone! I guess my husband used it for his salad that he took to work. It was the last green pepper in the fridge so now I have to make a trip to the market just for a green pepper.

Daily peppers are a good way to make sure they get their vitamin C. But you could try other vitamin C rich foods, too, if you have any.

Where are you at, gpig4? Here a read of romaine lettuce cost lest than $4, and lasts my two boys an entire week, along with other veggies. You can piece out with cilantro, which is usually pretty cheap (60 cents a bunch here), and most pigs really love it. I find that one bunch lasts me a week, but your mileage may vary.

Check out asian/ethnic food stores in your area. I found lots of sweet potato greens, peas in the pod, pak choi (feed sparingly), and a wide variety of edible herbs (cinlantro, basil, mint and more) at really reasonable prices.
