Hi I am currently feeding my piggies Timothy Hay but since I am expecting to increase the amount of piggies I was wondering if I could feed them the hay that horses eat. Its just that I have tons of suppliers close to my house, I also want to know, I purchased a bale of alfalfa how much should I feed because I read that only babies need it is that true?

Cavies need grass hay. You can find grass hay locally in bales just as you can find alfalfa. Types of grass hay include timothy, bermuda, bluegrass, orchard, meadow, etc.

Alfalfa is a legume hay and is sometimes used as a supplement for pregnant, nursing or young cavies under 6 months.

In addition to what Ly said, yes, guinea pigs can eat horse quality hay.

I was thinking someone had told me horse hay was fine.
Sad I have 77 huge round bales on my Dad's farm, but it's cow hay..

Don't piggies have to eat a softer hay with no hard stems or sticks in it? I give mine Orchard Grass from Oxbow and they love it. It's soft and fresh and when it's opened, has such a nice feathery feel to it. Drives my allergies nuts but they like it and that's what counts. I heard that a lot of times hard grass can actually kill pigs through impalement---their eyes especially.

Well DEBSPIGZ, some horse hay isn't great quality and is very stemy and course, but it's very possible to find soft horse hay.
