HI:

Great site, we have 19 little piggies, and growing. We keep getting more. My son works at a pet store and people are always dropping off these guys. Once he went to work and found 5 outside the door before opening.

So, I need to put the boars together and seperate the sexes, but the fighting is bad. So, any suggestions? I have just completed some really large cages 4 of them 7' x 3' , and 4 6'x2' and want to stop the madness with all these babies that "appear" when he brings home more orphans from the store. So, any suggestions or ideas would help. I know I can put dividers up, but would be nice if they could have all the free space!

thanks

Hello. Boy, you have a lot of guinea pigs! I don't get it, why do people keep dropping them off to you? Have the sexes been seperated yet or not?

How many boars do you have? How many sows? It will be easier to get the sows to live in a herd together, but you may need to have the boars in pairs or trios, you may be able to get as many as 4 or 5 per cage.

Do you have all the cavies together? Are you breeding?

Both my sons work at different pet stores, and the store policy is not to take back or take in any animals. Soooo, Dad the ever willing sucker, gets them. I also get parkeets, finches, etc. Just picked up three parakeets tonight.People just bring them back or decide they don't want them, they treat the store like a dumping ground for unwated pets. Makes me sick!. So I am trying to seperate them as they come in, to stop the breeding cycle. I am not a resuce but I think I may becoming one by accident! So is there any way to put the boars together and not have a blood shed?

Trying NOT to breed! That is why I am building new cages. Would like to get at least trios males to peacefull live together. I know the females will get along fine. Just the boars I am concerned about.

Sounds like the store is at fault then for their sucky policy regarding selling animals. Even Petco takes their returns.

Are you able to keep them all comfortably? I'm sure you can find some homes for them.

Right now they are in several cages in my heated basement. That is why I have been building new cages up so they all have a lot of room, 4 of the new cages are 7'x3', and 4 are 6'x2'. I got the design from the alternate cage ideas on the forum, so they should be comfortable. I do plan to start looking for homes for them soon. Hope to just keep my "pet" ones, foster others and find homes for them. Most of these are older ranging in ages from 2 -5 years. Two of the females are expecting so I MUST seperate them and then find homes for the babies. I hope to just have herds of males and females. I was hopeing that having a larger cage would make it possible for the boars to get along. If not I can still split the cage, so they can see each other, have plently of room and not fight.

By the way, the pet store take them, but have a policy not to "resale" them. That is why they end up needing a home.

Yes, many of us here have boars living together peacefully. I had 6 once and currently have 4 living together. You NEED to separate the sexes. Try to find a rescue in your area that can help you out.
