Ok Im a idiot, I know it but why is it that with all the laws out there, why is it not illegal to breed animals?
I was just thinking if the government made it highly punishable to breed any animal without special permits, there would be alot less unwanted births...
I mean if someone knows breeding will get them 6 mths in jail I think they will think twice and having a no tolerance policy set in place legally would I think nip this problem in the butt quick smart!

As for pet shops, it would leave them no choice but to sell either no animals or to only sell pets that would otherwise go to shelters..
Thats my random not gunna happen thought for the day~

In a perfect world: Not one animal would be abused, thrown away, die and they would all have the best perfect home.
In a perfect world: Not only would there be no breeding, there would be no dog or cock fighting rings. (We have that alot here. Sad.)

It's illegal to use or distribute drugs but we still have a drug problem.
It's illegal to commit crimes but we still have a crime problem.

Laws alone can't solve the problem, it's a matter of education, of people caring and being informed; of people willing to stand up to the atrocities breeders commit daily and spread the word about why breeding is most horrible for animals and people; that no person with even the slightest shred of compassion for animals or any moral ethic at all should ever breed.

I totally agree Access, but it would cut the rate right down.
Most of us would like to do things but the fact that it's illegal stops us so it wouldn't stop all people but the law abiding ones it would, and most breeders would class themselves as good law abiding citizens... it cant hurt.

I'm not so sure that criminalizing things (drugs, abortion, prostitution, underage drinking) cuts down on the amount at all, or that legalizing them causes the amount to skyrocket. Hello, black market. More education--real education, not hammering people with a biased view--seems to work at reducing the amount of trouble things cause, and of course if something is legal it can be taxed....

Special Permits: Yes, this could work only because half the people who wanted to breed would be too lazy to go fill out the paperwork for a permit. :)

Criminalizing things: This probably wouldn't work only because the thought that goes through alot of teenager's minds is: "It's only fun if it's illegal." . This thought also goes on in alot of peoples minds. I would know :)

Right, at least in theory -- making it a crime, and hence, creating a black market for bred guinea pigs would make the prices of pigs go up, making breeding even more rewarding and profitable for those who continue to do it, which may drive even more people to breed them in the long run in an attempt to make a quick buck.

Earth will never be a perfect world... speaking of which, not everyone has opinions on a perfect world of being 'no cavy breeding'. I, for one, would not view that as a perfect world. Having a permit to breeding, is like saying 'Human parents need a permit to have children'. Being negative about cavy breeding doesn't stop certain things. And without that one irresponsible breeder, would you have your greatful cavies?

In a perfect world we wouldn't have trolls like you, either.

There will never be a law to cut down breeding. People just don't think it's important enough. As for the education of how bad breeding is for animal populations, that has a chance of being effective, though a small one. Look at the D.A.R.E. program here in the states. They tell you about all of the problems with doing drugs, and yet look at how many people are stilling doing it. I doubt there will ever be a day when people get some sense knocked into their head. We can only hope.

If nobody breeds guinea pigs, the entire world's population of guinea pigs would be wiped out in 5 years. (I want to preface this by saying I do not, nor will I ever, breed guinea pigs, or any other animals.) I'd just like to hear how you all reconcile the fact that you all own guinea pigs, and love them as pets, and the ones you own were all bred at some point, but you are against breeding?

The problem with breeding, is not the breeding itself. It is with the people who breed. One person can "responsibly" breed a piggy, but then another person breeds a baby, then another baby is breed, and so on and so on, until there are a bunch of piggies in shelters. Laws will not change this. We already have laws regarding breeding mills, but they still operate everywheres, plsu their are honest accidents and I would hate to see someone punished for something they really did not mean to do. The only answer is better education, so that people will know that risks involved. I would also think it would be great if the government, or whoever offered free spayes and neutures. Then a lot of people would probably have it done. Vets make enough off the other procedures that they could afford one procedure for free.

I do however agree that only specialized people should breed. Breeding, to me at least, should always be about the health of mother and baby, along with making the breed better (removing genetic disorders and such) and the vast majority of people who have pigs are not able to do this.

Guinea pigs will never die out. THere will always be backyard breeders and people who do things even if it is against the law. Better to cut down on the numbers before they exist, than to have to euthenize them in the shleters because there are not enough homes.

Because the government doesn't give a s*** about animals or their welfare. Why do you think lab and meat animals can be so abused?

In a perfect world, I think there would be companion animals. However, you would need a permit to have any animal, and a costly permit to breed. You would only be allowed to breed if there were no animals of that species in need of adoption in your county at the time of filing a permit to breed your animals. You would need at least 10 applicants(some might drop out) that already had permits for owning an animal for a baby before you bred your cavy, 15 for cats and dogs, etc.
Yeah, can you guess
