I have read on guinealynx that impaction only happens to boys, and espeically elder ones, however, it is not a problem for neutered boys? Is it true, if it is, why? I am not sure why neuturing would change his anatomy... anyone?

Another question, is it EVER possible for a girl to have impaction?

I am about to knock myself out with a cutie I saw at the animal shelter Sunday, he's soooo cute, NEUTERED too, so he will be safe with my girls. However, I am truly impactionPHOBIC, so perhaps someone here can provide me with some information!

Thanks in advance, Momo

Taken from Guinea Lynx:

[font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Boars that have been neutered rarely if ever experience impaction.

[font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]It is possible for a sow to get impaction, but it is very rare. I think that the sac is much smaller on them. I say go get that pig

Thank you Piglet, I did read that on Guinealynx, but my question is WHY? anyone??? We both came home, talked it over dinner, both tempted, but we are both neither comfortable with or/and brave enough to handle the routine!
Any boys' slave owners would like to share their wisdom???

Neutering takes out the testicle making that region much smaller and less prone to impaction.

Oh, thanks dagwellismypigy, now I get it.
So once they are neutered, they rarely suffer from impaction. Is it true that pigs that lives on fleece carpeting also less prone to impaction compared to the ones live on other types of beddings???

Pretty much yeah, because on fleece you don't have the shavings/paper bedding/etc. getting caught up in the perineal sac. I have my boars on fleece and I only have to clean Bubba's sac about once every 4-6 weeks. Patch is only 9 1/2 weeks old, so he doesn't need his cleaned yet although I check it occasionally.

This is not my experience though. My oldest boar, that was castrated, got impaction, and I've also heard about other, castrated boars having this problem.

But cutemomome, don't be so "impaction-phobic", it's really not a big deal " treating" this, removing the lump daily/weekly quickly becomes a habit for both you and the pig =)

Personally I would rather deal with impaction than ovarian cysts.

Me too slap.
