I'm buying piggy stuff tomorrow

i already have a cage (ok, i'll admit its not a great cage but i would much rather pay for those mini fences and let my piggy hang out in there and play with me lol) so what do i absolutly have to buy? I have nothing except the cage right now, here is wat i thought of right now (feel free to vito something or give a cheaper replacement) so heres the list:
1. 16 oz bottle
2. fence
3. one of those waterproof washable blankets for floor time
4. Ceramic dish for food
5. Food
6. leash
7. alfalfa
8. hay, and some more hay
9. House
10. Some vitamin C (please give me a good brand to buy)
11. bedding (another good brand please)

so please, TIA:D

Re: I'm buying piggy stuff tomorrow

Looks like you got a pretty good list, i'd like to add a few things if i may do so:

alfalfa hay is good as a treat, since its high in fat which is good for mommies-to-be and babies and for lactating mommies. timothy hay is a better choice, you can give'em as much as they want, without ending up with a chubby cavy, lol.

the vitamins that they have in pet shops aren't that good for guinea pigs, the best way to make sure that they get the vitamin c that they mostly need (since thay are the only animals that are some what like humans) are from fresh greens like kale, romain lettuce (not iceberg, its not good for them, it might give them an upset stomach), carrots and fresh fruits like rasperries, apples, my babies luv oranges but i only give as a treat because of the acidity in citrus fruits. you can also try this, my females love it: mix 1/4 cup of unsweetend carnberry juice with a 1/2 gallon of water, keep chilled for the summer time (room temp for winter weather), i'll guarantee you it'll be a hit with your baby =0)

harnesses aren't really that good for cavies, it squeezes their mid section (its like putting on a really tight pair of jeans). if you do decide to get one, make sure you can fit the 1st four of your fingers around the mid section under the harness strap, that way you kow its not too tight and they can escape form the harness.

all of the other things you plan on getting is ok, you might wanna also get a black and white notebook so you can keep track of his/her growth and favorite foods and sleeping patterns, so if incase he or she is not acting his/her usualy self you can recognize it early. oh i almost forgot, have you decided on which kind of guinea pig you're gonna get??

i plan on buying a....

I'm hoping to buy a long haired piggy, my mom is a little bit unsure about buying piggy that needs extra hygene care but i'll win her over easily :D

Re: i plan on buying a....

ahh, the peruvian, very good choice. i had one, but i had to make special arrangements for her bedding, since the aspen would get tangled in her rear, and she was a bit fussy about me touching her rear end. so i gave her to my very good friend who raises peruvians for show and as loving pets. my favorite is the abyssian, i just love how their hair grows i have two of them (i gotta get a good camera and hopefully get a pic to show everyone) they kinda look like they stuck their tiny paw in a wall socket, lol   . good luck on getting a peruvian =0)

Re: i plan on buying a....

i talked my mom into getting the peruvian, its albino and adorable, with the thick wavy hair :D its getting really really hard to leave it alone  <img src=(broken link removed) ALT=" >D">

Re: i plan on buying a....

I tried a leash with some of my pigs and mostly they didn't like it.
I have a shetlie who gets bedding caught in her hair too. I use hay so whatever bedding you use, watch out for hay getting stuck too. Also I hav eto trim the hair round her bottom as it gets wet and dirty otherwise.
It is calcium that alfaha hay is high in. This can contribute to forming stones in piggies so it's best to give timothy unless the pig is a baby or pregnant/nursing.
Abbbys are my favorites too :)
Pigs also like to have things to hide in such as wooden houses or cardboards boxs. Tunnels are good too. Most pigs like cavy cozies and you can make those yourself or use a tea cozy or a leg from an old pair of trousers.
To keep your piggie cool in the hot weather use frozen pop bottles of water wraped in a towel or trouser leg. Ceramic tiles can also make a cooler spot for them to lay. This will be more important for you long haired piggieas it will be extra hot.
It's also best to have at least two pigs. They are much happier with company. Be sure they are the same sex though. Be careful cos petshops can often make mistakes.

What did you call your new pig? :)

Vodka lol, i figured the red eyes and crazy hair would make it the funniest lol. I dont have the space for 2 pigs unfortunatly, but i'll spoil her good. i have double checked the sex yet (shes being shy of course lol)

Re: I'm buying piggy stuff tomorrow

seems like you have a good list.
you can try www.theferretstore.com
they have good bargains on hay.

You can also get them a little bed. one of those lined w/ fleece. my pigs love that thing they always sleep in it. i also put a towel around the side to make a covered corner. i secure it under the cage so they can't pull it in. it also acts as a hammock.
also you can try litter training them. most people say the have no luck, but oddly i had an easy time. cleopatra did it on her own, and blackberry just started following her.
and the last thing. don't get a leash. i doubt you will even have the need for one. another thing, i recently was playing w/ my girls and i tried to put a bow on her and they both flipped out. they wont like it. lastly it might strangle your pig.
and you should also get two pigs, it would make them much happier.

Re: I'm buying piggy stuff tomorrow

If you fold a cubes grid in half and put a towel over it you can make a great little tent for your pig :)
My pigs pretty much litter trained themselves. They wee along one side of the cage and do most of their poos there too. Pigs can be litter trained successfully, even if they are completely free range.
My abby, Fudge doesn't mind the leash to much. She wriggles abit but when it's on she's ok. I use mine sometimes and take her down to my garden. Haven't done that for ages now though as I made a pen from cubes and just put them in there while I'm working down there. I don't like to leave them alone as there are alot of cats where I live.
