Iams cruelty

The only link I can give you is (broken link removed) and I see someone else already posted it.
I talked with an Iams representative and privately questioned him about the research labs.
And what makes you think that a website created by Iams or an Iams representative is going to give you 100% of the facts? The company wants to look good to you, and whoever you spoke to wants to keep his job. Money goes a long way towards influencing people. If in fact Iams is cleaning up their testing facilities, then WAY TO GO! I would suggest though that talking to Iams about the problems with Iams probably isn't going to produce the most honest information.

I understand a website published by the company is not the best to trust. But then again, who can we trust? I have not yet found a neutral reporter on this issue. Its either Peta's article or Iams article. Both seem a bit biased to me.
As for the Iams worker trying to protect his job, it is possible, although I spoke to him privately and I do not think he viewed me as a threat to his job in any case. I like to think people are honest (but I certainly know many are not.)

I wonder if Eukanuba is good though? I don't have a dog but hope to get one in 4 years or so!:bored: Its horrible what Iams is doing!:guilty:

Eukanuba isn't really any different from Iams. They're owned by the same company.

Good question, who do we trust? I just found out that Iams, Purina and the many many store brands of wet pet food that were recalled were manufactured by Menu Foods Corp in Canada. (broken link removed)
This company did belong to Proctor & Gamble who sold it in 2003. We know so very little about the pet food we buy that it's scary. I feel like a dope for doing all that label reading if it's all made in the same place anyway. i'm glad I can buy from Oxbow for my piggies. Does any one know if there is a small & trustworthy comapny where we can buy dog food?

Seagirl, this is what I posted about dog food in the thread in general chat, hopefully this provides you with some answers:
The recalled foods are all very bad for dogs, and provide little to no nutrition. They contain what is called 'fillers', which is basically anything that the company can buy cheap to make more dog food, no matter what it is. This can included any number of things, especially animal by-products and 'meal', which is basically ground up piece of animal. My rule of thumb is to look at the first five ingredients. The first two should probably be some source of protein, NOT animal by-products, but whole prodcusts, like chicken or turkey. The first five should also contain natural, non-byproduct ingredients that are healthy for the dog. In my opinion, one of the best companies out there to buy dog food from is Wysong: (broken link removed). Their dog food has absolutely NO animal by-products or fillers, and my two girls have been on it for several years without problems.

Example: Ingredients of Iams Lamb and Rice formula
Lamb Meal, Brewers Rice, Corn Meal, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Corn Grits, Chicken By-Product Meal, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Chicken Fat (Preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Dried Beet Pulp (Sugar Removed), Fish Meal, Natural Chicken Flavor, Dried Egg Product, Potassium Chloride, Brewers Dried Yeast, Salt, Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate (Source of Vitamin B1), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement (Source of Vitamin B2), Inositol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Source of Vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Fish Oil (Preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Choline Chloride, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate), Monosodium Phosphate, DL-Methionine, Rosemary Extract

Ingredients of Purina Beneful
Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), rice flour, beef, soy flour, sugar, sorbitol, tricalcium phosphate, water, animal digest, salt, phosphoric acid, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, sorbic acid (a preservative), L-Lysine monohydrochloride, dried peas, dried carrots, calcium carbonate, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, vitamin supplements (E, A, B-12, D-3), added color (Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2), DL-Methionine, zinc sulfate, glyceryl monostearate, ferrous sulfate, niacin, manganese sulfate, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, biotin, thiamine mononitrate, garlic oil, copper sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite.

Hopefully that info helps and clues you in on what to look for in food some more.:)

Thanks, I did check that web site but kind of pricey for me. Archetype is $29.00 a lb and archetype burgers are $25.00 a lb. The dry is cheaper but they recommend mixing it with the archetype. If I had a yorkie, I could do it but not for my golden retriever.

I am trying a dog food called Canidae. Can anyone tell me if this is a good company, i.e. no animal testing? It's all natural & has no corn, wheat or soybeans. It's not sold at any Petsmart or Petco around here, just Agway & such. I paid $35 for 40 lbs so it's not cheap but is affordable.

May I just ask why? I have a yellow lab and a beagle mix, and they've both eaten dry food their entire lives.

I'm sorry, I was totally unclear. I feed both my dogs dry food. I was trying to say that because one of my dogs is quite large & eats a lot, I have to consider price more than I would if I had just the small dog. I was certainly not trying to say that dry food is not good. My Vet says it's better for them, especially my Bichon. Bichons are very prone to kidney stones so she is on a strict diet of dry food, no canned, no table scraps, no treats.

I was trying to say that I am looking for a high quality dry food from a trust-worthy company, but looking back, I can see I didn't say that at all. From now on I will proof read twice, once for spelling & again to see if I am saying what I think I am saying!

Ah, I see.lol No harm, no foul. Good luck with the new food!

Is pedigree good?
Is there a dog food that can be trusted!

Clementine, pedigree is not a trusted food. Chances are, if you can find it at a mainstream store, like Walmart, Target, Jewel, etc., it's not going to be a good food. This is the same info I gave Seagirl:

I am now using Canidae, all natural, made in Calif., no wheat, corn or soybeans or fillers, so it's good if you have a dog with allergies. Here's their website: All Natural, Human Grade, Holistic Pet Foods. Dog Food, Cat Food, Kitten Food, Dog Biscuits, & Canidae Platinum Diet I paid $38.00 for forty lbs. but need to feed less than the Purina Beneful because it has more nutritional value. So far I am impressed with this food.

Docdolittle, do you know about this food? You have done your homework & I value your opinion.

I just read what Iams does to their animals, and I will never buy any of their products until they stop being so cruel (IamsCruelty.com.) I'm also going to inform my friends on how they treat animals.
ME NEITHER!!!!And I'm telling everybody,too!It's beyond disgusting!!!!

Clementine, pedigree is not a trusted food. Chances are, if you can find it at a mainstream store, like Walmart, Target, Jewel, etc., it's not going to be a good food.

That explains why Iams pet food can be purchased in the grocery stores and Walmarts:)

Fuzzbutt lover, I have read here that Iams & Eukanuba are the same company. There are recommended foods & websites that are much better. I just switched to Canidae & my dogs are more energetic, no more hot spots and better coats. I love it & no corn or soy and all ingredients are grown right here in USA so no contaminated Chinese ingredients that were killing cats & dogs.

For those of you looking for a good, natural cat or dog diet in Canada, I can't recomend Orijen enough. It's made here in Canada, and owned locally, so you won't be supporting Proctor and Gamble, or any of the other not-really-premium-food companies. It's got 0% grain and high quality meat. The down side is, its kind of pricey. But then, you can feed less of it since there's no filler crud. I know that my cat absolutely adores Orijen.

Ok everyone has got me confused as to what I should be feeding my 2 cats and 1 dog (dachshund). We were feeding them Iams until the recall came out. I was unaware of this animal tests and am thoroughly disgusted. So what do you recommend that I can buy locally and not have to have it shipped to me. Where do you ya'll buy your canine and feline food...Petsmart, local stores, what???
