Animal Rights I want to close a pet store nearby

I live near a petshop, and that place is DISGUSTING. "Exotic Pets Warehouse", even though cats and dogs aren't exotic :shhh:

The lights are dim, parrots are in fish tanks, furry pets are loosing hair, guinea pigs and chinchillas are cramped, itchy, and balding. The fish are over crowded, everything smells like pee, the temperature is not regulated ( I went in the Summer, and it was worse than being outside )

The water and food is crummy or non-existent. I am planning on looking in there again, and then calling the Yonkers SPCA. I will be checking in on them after the call.

Is there anything else I should do? They're all so sick...:weepy:

Check the state's regulations for petstore management, etc...You can try to speak politely with the manager of the facility. Emphasis on polite because if you are rational, he may understand where you are coming from and he may try to make conditions better. Being irrational will just make the person angry, and they will not comply.
Call the SPCA, and take it from there. Don't buy any animals or anything from them at all. Maybe see if you can help the store out once in a while and play with the animals.
If they are selling animals, they were more than likely bought from a warehouse/mill. They may have already come to him with illnesses. But that is still no excuse to keep them in that condition. See that there is a very who is aware of the problems. If they give a name of the vet, call the vet maybe and see if the vet office has any records of those animals coming in. If there is no vet care available, take not of that. I would takes pictures if you can, and make a list of things that are wrong and need to be addressed.

I seriously doubt any vet would give out a clients records like that. At least a reputable one wouldn't, having done numerous vet checks, we'd always ask potential adopters to contact their vet and give permission to give it out.

I guess that makes sense. But they couldn't even give out if they were in at all? I have never dealt with this, so I don't know what info you can get and what you cannot.

A vet has ethics, standards and they must follow. Would you want your vet giving out information about you and your animals to some stranger who just called up and asked for it?

Check with your local council - In Northern Ireland our local councils are responsible for issuing licences to pet shops, they can do spot checks on these shops, and enforce changes or even close them down. They will respond to concerns brought to them by members of the public. I don't know how it works in New York, but its worth a shot.
