I have a lot of friends who work or have worked at pet stores. So while I often go into rants about how much breeding and overpopulation make me upset, i also find myself haveing to shut up and take yelling from them when they tell me " NO. I WORKED THERE THEY CARE ABOUT THE ANIMALS!"
I started a convo with a friend who used to work at a small local store and she was saying that the pigs there usually had 4-6 babies except for once when the mommy had 12, and I asked her if she was still doing that and she said no and i said good and she said that it was a good place. I said quote:
"Its never "nice" there. Im sorry but its just not. Breeding them is like taking a naked woman and putting her in a room with a bunch of horny men.
As if there arent enough piggies in shelters anyway. Lets make more so the shelter ones can get euthanized?
Im not blaming you so please dont think that, im sure you worked there because you love animals but Petstores are misleading and their version of good care is very very much substandard. ;_;"
Well she got really mad at me and said:
"Okay. Setsu they breed on their own :| We don't force them to do jackshit.
And it's not misleading. I WORKED there for godsake. And this store is NOT petsmart or anything. It's a small LOCAL petstore that actually gives a shit. One of the guinea pigs in the litter of 12 was born too small and frail, so we hand fed him every-single-day. We let some of the birds out in the back room, too.
Ugh. Just don't get me started. Just DO NOT get me started on that. Just calling that store 'substandard' and shit makes me want to vomit. Pisses the hell out of me too and I only worked there for two damn months."
So now im irritated and ive replied:
"Um yeah the guy who abandoned his 3 piggies alone in his apartment let them breed on thier own too.
now theres over 200 of them in an LA shelter...
An i said i wasnt blaming you! Im sure you love animals very much but that dosent mean you always know everything they need just because you were employed at a small store. and small stores dont neccesarily have better care anyway. Especially if they were housing the males and females together.

You have no idea how much im holding myself back right now...
Now I suggets you disperse since you obviously have no idea how ****ing much i hate breeders who make selfish justifications... If that store had really cared about the pigs theyd have adopted out some of the hundreds of guinea pigs in shelters instead of making more "pocket pets" that an irate mother can grab for her 5 year old since he wont stop bugging her about a puppy."
I think that along with the breeding section there should be examples, not just of petshop neglect but also of the ignorance of teh store staff. You wouldnt be working there if they didnt liek animals but I think itd be nice to show them that good feelings dont work as well as good care,food,safe housing and adequate space.
Im pretty sure im going to end up in a screaming match before the end of the night... I dont liek fighting with my friends... but i hate people who are sure they did everything right when they actually caused more harm more.
