I have one piggie and I am getting another next month currently April is in a 14 by 36 inch cage but I have another smaller cage about 12 by 28 inches that I will use to quarentine but once thats ove do you think conecting the two is a good Idea because I cant make a c&c dont tell me to try again its not going to happen for at least two years.

I don't think connecting them would be good. I am assuming they are both pet store cage? It just wouldn't work in my eyes, because wouldn't the pigs have to hop from one cage to the other? If you can take pictures of the two cages then we could give you better advice

Ok, let me get this straight. You can't make a C&C cage and you don't want to hear anyone tell you otherwise. You have two small cages that you are considering connecting somehow and you want someone to tell you that is good enough even though it's only 5.83 sq ft and you plan on putting two pigs in it. I'm not trying to sound rude at all...really. I just don't understand what you're expecting to hear. :)

Yeah, let me add (although it is pretty obvious) that even the combined square footage would probably be too small.

How much space do you have? Can you not get a C&C because of it's size or because of the cost? Because there are alternatives to materials, for example you can use a shower curtain instead of correx.

Hopping from one cage to the other isn't a big problem if you put a fiddlesticks house over the walls as a bridge! My pigs never had any difficulties with it.

Pet store cages only have a very small opening right? To connect the two cages wouldn't you have to put the two openings face on? THat would limit running space

I really don't know what to say here. I don't know why you can't make a C&C.

Sorry, Even I, who can be very liberal in these matters have to admit that your cage is way too small for one piggy, let alone 2 piggies. I would seriously think twice about getting another pig. I know this didn't answer your question, sorry.

sigh no matter what their'll always be people ragging on you about something on here. The best alternative that ive found if you do not have C&C cage materials is an old bed crib.I have a 4 year old angora who i have in a crib and just loves it.and as for the shower curtain idea Very brilliant.Thats what im using for his sides.ontop of that theres carpet.Even another idea is an old dresser.Pull all the drawers out and shave everything down :).I have done this too as a matter of fact.Although i think C&C are the best cages built to date i still like experimenting with other things.i must say i do agree with not putting the 2 cages apart unless you attach them to something else.On here sometimes you cant afford to do anything but make up your own designs.ill post new pics of my cages Very soon i havent posted in awhile causei just moved into a new house so finally i got my cages up and everything.

How often are you going to let them out for floor time?

I was thinking of doing something similar, but with larger cages. We had our boys in an open 4x4 foot pen, but when we got a dog just recently, we had to put them both in a large cage for safety. I would have put them in two separate cages, but every time I've done that, even for a few days, they fight like crazy when they are together again.

Now, I'm weighing my options for more space. One cage I am thinking of buying is about 6 square feet with a second floor, and the second is about 4 square. Anyway - I was thinking about cutting holes on the pans and connecting them with 4"+ PVC pipe, and siliconing to seal.

If you don't need to keep other pets out, you have a lot more lee-way. At one point, we had built a fence from the wire shelving panels around a large area of floor, laid it with plastic mats (those clear hall-runner kind) that we had found at the Dollar General store, and had their smaller cages inside the fence and open so they could hop in and out to eat and sleep.

Also - you can buy cheap linoleum or vinyl flooring remnants for flooring.

I'm not particular good with cutting plastic (or finding it) or wiring cages together either, so you have my sympathy.

okay I am making a fiddle stick bridge to connect them. the reason why I cant make a c&c is because I have two cages already and my parents dont understand this you see the first one I got was from my grandparents and it was tiny so I got a bigger one and then I came here. On school days they get once a day 2-3 hours and on weekends and when I off 2-3 timees for 2-3 hours.

That's kind of lame. Did you show them the C&C cages, how cheap they are to make? Your pet store cages are way too small.

Not always true. I have a 3X3 C&C with an almost 2X3 penthouse. It's strong enough to keep my cats out. Heck it's better then the pet store cage. They can just run to the other side of the cage is that cats annoy them.

I have to agree with Sabriel that having other pets does not hinder the possibilities in cage designs. I currently have a 4x4 cage and my roof (though probably not strong enough for a dog to jump on) is plenty able to hold off my 3 cats and my 2 larger dogs cannot bite through the cubes to get at them and they wouldn't anyway. You just have to train your dogs that the piggies are off limits.

And you have to train your cats (if you have any) that piggies are not kittens so don't groom them to death. Or sit on them when there is not enough room in a single human's lap.

I just started a thread looking for corex in San Francisco. It's not been easy! And then I saw your idea shower curtain alternative. That sounds like a great possibility if I can't find corex in the near future, at least for a stop-gap measure. Just curious how it works, and how the sides of the curtain stay up. It sounds like a better alternative than linoleum, at least according to the linoleum issues I've read about on cavy forums.

I've made a new cage with flooring out of a plastic carpet liner that is meant for shoes to go on. I bought it at Walt Mart for like three dollars. I simply cut it to size the same way it is explained to do with cloroplast, leaving extra on the sides to fold it and make a lip to combact kicked up shavings. I folded the sides and ducted taped them and it fits inside the outer grid which holds it in place. The only problem is that it's floppy, so I have to be very carful not to spill when I take it out to clean it.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your suggestion. It sounds like a good alternative I may have to try one of these days! But this evening after making several unsuccessful coroplast/corex phone calls around SF all afternoon I made what may or may not be a temporary "corex" box! I got a huge cardboard box and cut it to the right size as you describe with the hay-catching lips and then covered it with a shower curtain and loaded it up with bedding etc and it's great!! I guess I could even call it a C and C (although the 2nd C stands for cardboard!). Not sure how long it'll last, but we needed to make this ASAP.

I understand about your parents not letting you get the c+c cage. I have the same problem, but after my piggies started fighting way more they're considering it more and hopefully we'll be getting some correx on saturday to make the cage.

Try printing off this page or the homepage...this will be proof that they NEED a bigger cage for their health and wellbeing.
