I came across this casting tape from Animal Planets Confessions:animal hoarding. Confessions: Season 3 Casting Tapes : Videos : Animal Planet

David- was a great example of a hoarder. The animals aren't taken care of and he breeds for fun, just to "see the cool colors I get".

I'm not sure if this show aired or if they ever helped David find his animals proper homes. I just makes me sad to see these poor animals living in tiny cages, stacked on top of eachother.

Oh and I didn't miss that he cooks food for the homeless next to all the dirty cages.

My mother is an animal hoarder. My entire childhood is riddled with these images. It's incredibly depressing, and watching this brings back so many terrible memories of what happened when I was younger. At one point in time, we had horses (10+), sheep (5+), ducks, chickens, dogs (6+), cats (20?, 30?, we would lose track), rats, mice, gerbils, hermit crabs, birds, fish and so on and so forth. She has allergies to a few small animals (guinea pigs and ferrets are the main ones, so I never grew up with either of those). I think that's part of the reason I wanted guinea pigs. They are an animal that hasn't been soiled by childhood memories. She often bred animals intentionally, too. Growing up, my older sister and I became more and more worried about the animals, and contemplated calling animal control on our own mother.

Thankfully, my parents got divorced (around the time I was 15), and most of the animals found new homes. I believe a few of the horses were taken by a rescue, even. My mother now lives with a single dog and two cats. I think the worst part about all this is how much she complains about pet owners not getting their animals spayed/neutered, and even worked at a vet's office for quite some time. I know that if my parents had stayed together, things never would have changed, and many more animals would have gone through the terror that was my household. :/

These shows are always so sad to watch. I disagree though, with saying that he was a great example of a hoarder, and I have seen many episodes where the people featured are completely opposed to the "breeding for fun" theory, and yet are hoarders. The majority of the hoarders that I see on the show take these animals in as rescues, off the street or out of a bad home, thinking that they are doing the animal a favour. However, they bring them into these dirty, diseased, overpacked environments thinking that they are still doing what is best for the animal. And as anyone would, the gratitude of helping an animal in need is immense and it makes you want to do it all the time! Although they have good intentions at heart, in reality they are not providing the animals with the adequate care that they deserve. I am certainly not condemning animal hoarding, nor do I think that "because its out of the good of their heart" is an excuse for hoarding, I do think that each situation is individual to the person. Some hoarders are actually mentally ill and cannot bear with the thought of parting with their animals. I am not trying to bash your ideas here or anything, I just thought it would be good to view it from another angle as well. Just my 2 cents though :)

amwelles- I'm sorry this brought up bad memories:( It's really amazing you and your sister took away the love of animals you have. Others might not want animals around.

louie_joey- I see your point. I do see the panic in these people's faces at the thought of losing even one animal. The breeding issue is not alway "for fun", but from lack of neuter/spaying all the animals they have. Usually their resources are low and go towards food... I can see the urge to "save" all these animals. I think most animal lovers come to some point where they have to just say no. Luckly I have my husband to help;) Most likely these people are using the animals to fill a void, and sometimes the animals best interest are not taken into account. It is hard to watch though.
