I just don't get some people and what is going through their freaking heads! (long)

I know that some of you have read my one thread about raccoons right? well the girl that I talk about in that thread has not been talking about the coon any more or anything about it and then she hit me today with it! SHE HAS TWO NOW! I can't belive her! not just one but two! she told me that her older brother and dad were out hunting this weekend (they live out in the country) and they shot a 'coon. I guess they were just looking around in the tree they shot it in and they found the two babies. I wanted to cry and just slap her all at the same time! ( almost not joking! > Not only that but then she had the nerve to ask me if I wanted one, because her dad said that she was only allowed to keep one and if she dosn't find a home for the other one then he will shot that one too! (I have alway hated him)

Not only now has she gotten her self in trouble with the law (they are illigal in ontario) but she has also lost a friend too. I told her before that if she was to get a 'coon that I would not come to her house anymore because of it and all the dieases that it could have and the risk of it sontaminating any of my animals or even me. I have been doing months of reacher for her to get her all the info that people on this forum have givin me but I have talked to so many others about this and they just flat out say that this is something that should be done/only if ever needed by some one with a lot of time, money,and not to mention experence!

I'm sorry that this is so long and that it probaly doesn't even belong on this forum but I just had to let ever one know a little update, and to get this off my chest! I just hope that these little guys will be okay and as much as I would love to help her with this I have done that best that can.

Report her to your local health department/animal rescue place/animal control. She is not allowed to keep them as pets and that's the end of it.

Yeah, you should report her. That way the coons can go to a place where they will be raised by experienced people and prepared to be re-leased into the wild where they belong. This is in the best interest of the coons.

I'll talk to her tonight. I am her friend still and I don't want to get her in any trouble if I can but I will report her that is because it is in the best interest of the raccoons. I have done some reading recently in the press and this is kind of sad- alot of humane societies and shelters that usually did take in raccoons, aren't anymore and if you do bring one in the are just putting them done now because they are to many and not enough volunteeres and money to care for them all. I think that my friend will take of them as best she can (even though I don't think she can/should) they might be better off with her then at a shelter. I 'll have to sleep on it.

Hopefully you can talk her into surrendering them herself, but you can probably report it anonymously if she won't. It is sad, it's like rabbits over here. My friend's dog dug up a litter of baby rabbits (but didn't harm them) and she took them to the rescue centre herself when the mother failed to return. They are considered pests and hence were euthanised. If she DOES decide to take care of them then she must consider the legalities. It may be illegal or she may require a permit. Even if she gets a permit they MUST be vaccinated against rabies and (from what I hear) there are very few vets that will do this for a raccoon.

UPDATE:

Well I talked to my friend again and she said that she lied! She WAS going to get her dad and brother to go out and kill a mother raccoon but they haven't yet and because of all the info that I gave her about the coon she said that " Damn you Amy, you gave my a stupid consious" well what ever works. I guess all my bugging and bothering worked and they will be no coon for her! YES!!!! I am so happy that my plan worked even if she dose think that I am evil or what ever. I am Happy now! I also told her that I she did get one (coon) then I would have to report her to the humane society and they would come andtake it away or what ever, she said that, that would be very stupid because she knows lots of people (apparently) that have raccoons and that if I was going to report her then I would have to report all of them then too. I'm not going to report any one though because I don't know any of these people and it would just cause a big problem between my firend and I becuase they are all her friends. Well I just can't tell you how happy I am to everyone for all of the help that you gave me and all the reseach that you all helped me get! thanks again. Tink

Wow...good to know. I've been worried about the raccoons and have been concerned about the type of people that would go out and kill a mother animal just to take her babies. Good to know that in this instance it didn't actually happen.
