I' Confused!!!

Ok, I KNOW that there have been these sorts of threads before, but I just want to clear it up.
I'm doing an assignment on Peru and I chose guinea pigs as a subject. I went on to a website today and it says their status is domestic only and they are related to an agouti! I thought the agouti was a coat type and guinea pigs live in the wild!!!
Clear it up for me!!! I have all the class and species stuff down but this is confusing me!

Agoutis are wild animals that look like giant slim guinea pigs with long legs, kind of like small capybaras. They're speckled brown, like agouti-colored guinea pigs. Check this out: (broken link removed)

I first saw one of these on the show "Petkeeping with Marc Malone". He has one. Since you can't import one to Hawaii, I researched some more and got an agouti-colored pig instead!

Also, I read in a some guinea pig books that there are no longer wild populations of guinea pigs. Then again, these are books that tell you all lettuces are bad for piggers and that they only need a handful of hay a day.

This is silly but wouldn't it be awesome to be a wild guinea pig herder? You could carry a tiny little crook and protect them from hawks and such while you herd them to different little patches of grass. Hehe.
