Pellets How will pellets last outside of the freezer?

I plan on switching from Oxbow to Kleenmama's pellets. After doing some math, I found that paying $65 (that includes shipping) for 50 lbs of km's pellets is a better deal than $18/$19 for 10 lbs of oxbow (can't remember how much, but the price went up).

ANYWAY, I currently have very limited freezer space. My husband and I are currently looking for a freezer chest and we plan on remodeling our kitchen in the winter, so I will get our old fridge to put all my piggies veggies in! YAY!

How long will pellets last outside of the freezer? I think I read that they are good for 3 months (stored in a dark place), but I can't remember.

Yes that sounds about right. I think, especially oxbow, has a shelf life of 6 months if it is stored in a airtight and opaque (dark/not see through) container. Also if its stored in the coldest possible location and dry will also help it stay longer. But when you get the chance stick it in a freezer. I keep mine at my moms house in her second freezer... I think it lasts about 12 months in the freezer.

I'm actually not convinced that vitamin C is any more stable in the freezer than room temp. Make sure you're providing adequate vitamin C through veggies (1/8 bell pepper per day per pig should do it). Keep your pellets in an airtight container out of the light, but don't worry too much about whether or not they are in the freezer.

I figured, with 12 piggies, 50lbs should last me just under 4 months, so I think I'll be ok leaving them in the basement. I will put some in the freezer too...may have to stash some at my parents' place until we get a new fridge or chest freezer.

Also, my piggies do get green peppers everyday...not their most favorite veggie, but they do eat them.

Thanks!
