It has been an constent debate in my house on how to say cavy. So my mom finally made me ask all of you how to say it.

Is it : Kay-vy or Ca-vy

Thanks

Cavvee- like, "cavity" without the "it" part. At least that's how I say it. Nothing to do with caves ;)

CAV - eee
That's how I say it. Google it, the computer can "speak" the word so you can hear the pronunciation. For example, I never said "cuppola" correctly til I heard it.

[h=3]ca·vy/ˈkāvē/
[/h]
Noun:
A South American rodent (family Caviidae) with a sturdy body and vestigial tail. Its several species include the guinea pig.

Google is your friend.

I say Cavee.

I think that is how to say it.

oops, been saying it wrong!

I am still not 100% sure.

I have herd it said both ways, who knows?

I do believe it's pronounced Cay-vee. :)

i pronounce it cay-vee too :)

How can you tell how to say it, anyways? It's almost immpossible! Sure, there might be a, 'propper,' way to say it, but everyone has there own way of saying it! I say, 'c-a-v-y.' But why did you'r mom wanna know how to say it? In case she was saying it wrong? Did poeple not understand what she ment when she said cavy?

I think either way can be considered correct. Tomayto, tomahto. Of course, I just generally say guinea pig anyway. ;)

I think post number 4 nailed it, tomato/tomato*, Crème brûlée or custard. 99% of people will not understand Cavy but will understand guinua pig. Also as pointed out Cavy is kind of generic for the species (family Caviidae ).

* Allusion to George Gershwin's song "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off": "You like tomatoes (/təˈmeɪtoʊz/) and I like tomatoes (/təˈmɑːtoʊz/)".

I only use cavy when I have to type it a bunch of times, because it's quicker to spell then guinea pig. I don't really care how it's pronounced, I'll continue to pronounce it kavee because the other way makes me feel like I'm giving a nickname to a cave.

I don't usually say it (I prefer guinea pigs, guineas, piggies, etc), but when I do, I tend to say it like "kay-vee". "Kav-ee" sounds slightly strange to me, but it could just be because of my accent.

Same here. I usually just say piggies, pigs, babies, and so on. When I do say their scientific name, (or at least, it seems to be their scientific name), I pronounce it, 'cavy,' (cavy). I don't know why, but all the others sounds very strange to me. Although I'm always trying to open my mind to new things and sounds, I never undertood 'kay-vee,' 'cav-ee,' 'cay-vee,' etc., lol :). You can say it any way you wish, (just...try to stay on the basic line of how it sounds, lol!).

But about my post I did right abouve this....Have I been saying it wrong? I just seems so silly to me, that there is a right way to say a word, even though they almost sounds the same, but I guess that's just me :).

It's cavy (rhymes with savvy). That's why the phrase "cavy savvy" vet was coined because cavy and savvy rhyme which makes it catchy.

Thank you CavyMama!!! I had been saying it wrong! You know how the letter 'a' makes two basic sounds? Well I was saying the 'a' wrong! Now I know how to do it the, 'propper,' way, lol!!
Thanks-
Luna
