I might get a new piggy soon that will be under three months or so (that's what the rescue's website says), and, as I've heard so much about alfalfa being bad for adults but good for younger pigs, I'd really like to know how soon they're considered adults and when to stop giving 'em alfalfa. :)

As a general rule, feed young pigs alfalfa feed--Cavy Performance by Oxbow. You can feed that food until one year of age. I would feed the pigs alfalfa until they are six months old, then gradually switch to timmy hay. I recommend (broken link removed) hay, but (broken link removed) hay is good, and has better shipping on the east coast.

Are you getting two pigs, or one to be a playmate to one you have Just wondering.

Well, if I got this one, it'd be with his dad, because this place STRONGLY believes in guinea pigs having buddies so they won't be loney, and will only adopt them out in pairs unless you already have one at home.(I agree!) I was also wondering about how to feed the younger one alfalfa without giving it to the dad. :)

Hmmm... I think that you could take him out every day to give him his alfalfa if you want to. Otherwise, I really don't know. I wouldn't separate them if they are bonded. You can probably use Cavy Performance pellets and timmy hay. Ooooh--you can use alfalfa pellets and a mix of alfalfa and timmy hay! I think that will work better. If the dad puts on a bit of weight it shouldn't be for long, right? Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

i have a question - is it ok if the babies are on timothy pellets, and alfalfa hay?

I believe so, loves2travel. It should be fine, as long as they are getting their nutrients and all. Thanks for asking!

all right. thats good to know. thanks for answering so quick!
