Hi, I'm trying to convince my dad to order hay and pellets from KM's Hayloft, but first I need a few answers. How many lbs of pellets should we order, and how long would it stay good for? I'm going to show him the price comparisons per pound. I already have my answers for hay, so that's not necessary.

Thank you all so so much(in advance)! All of you are very helpful!

Here is my research a year ago about pellets. The prices might have gone up slightly since but its a close estimate...

(broken link removed)

25lbs timothy pellets $16 + 23.90 for shipping = 39.90
50lbs timothy pellets $28.50 + 29.97 for shipping = 58.47
Kleenmama's Hayloft
10017 N Coulee Hite Br. Rd
Reardan, WA 99029

Small Pet guinea pig food: Oxbow Essentials Food
Oxbow from defostersmith.com
Cavy cuisine pellets 50lbs 74.99 + free ship for over $50 = 74.99

(broken link removed)
Sweet meadow timothy pellets
50 lbs $22.99 + 37.13 for shipping = $60.12

PetStupid online:
Oxbow pellet
10x5lb bags = $139.99 + $5.99 the cost of shipping = 145.98

Also shipping costs are based on my address which is in Minnesota (right in the middle of the 3 companies) If you live closer to one than the shipping will also be more or less.

But based on the 50lb price KMs is cheaper and since it is the best it is a win win situation.

How much you order is also based on how many guinea pigs you have. If you have 2 guinea pigs that are over 6 months of age they need 1/8th of a cup of pellets a day each. A week that is 1.75 cups. 1 lb of pellets is 2 1/3 cups so thats 3/4 of a lb of pellets per week. KM recommends keeping the pellets in a cool dark dry place (I keep mine in a standing freezer since I have bug and storage issues but you don't have to. She also recommends not buying more than a 6 month supply because she cannot ensure that the Vit C will be stable for more than 6 months. SOO based on that 26lbs will last you 6 months. So I would recommend buying the 25lb bag and replacing it every 5 months so that you can combine some of the old with the new the last few weeks and you are sure that you have a steady supply...

KMs is DEFINATELY worth it believe me in the gas and time alone its a great saver!!!

Good luck. Can't wait to see pics of those piggies enjoying those great pellets!

What is the best option (how many lbs to get) if you have 1 guinea pig?

Thank you SO much! I couldn't find how long the pellets remain stable, and so couldn't figure out how much to order, but now I know! I can't believe how much cheaper the good stuff is...

And yes I have 2 year-old piggies, so your math is perfect!

I switched from Cavy Cuisine to KM timothy pellets and my guinea pigs all prefer the KM pellets.

arionat799 only buy a 6 month supply which would be 1/2 of what is listed above. KMs is the best in terms of quality so even though a smaller bag will not be as much of a saving as the bigger bags its still a far better quality. I'm not sure what size bags that are less than 25lbs so you'll have to go on the site and see for yourself...

Looks like Oxbow is MUCH cheaper for me, shipping from KM's Hayloft to me is more than the cost of the product :( but Oxbow is still WAY better than what they're on now. I may still order KM's hay after I figure out how much Dad spends on the 1.5 lb bags that only last like a week, I think it'll still be cheaper.

Actually, I think they have Oxbow at my local pet store (very close, so the thing about gas doesn't appy) so I may try to buy from there unless we order the dogs things from Foster & Smith soon.

Oxbow isn't THAT much worse, is it?

I buy Oxbow orchard grass by the 50 lb box. It's less expensive for me than the KM hay and I think the Oxbow hay quality is just as good as KM hay. I think the KM pellets are tastier to my guinea pigs but the Cavy Cuisine is a good product, too.

I was thinking about going to pick up the Kleenmama hay myself because she offers local pickup and we live in the same state. The drive is 5 hrs!! It would cost $20-$30 more to have the hay shipped, so should I just buy Oxbow from the store? then I could pick it up when ever I want to as well.

Have you calculated how much you would pay for gas to drive 5 hours to pick up by yourself?
