How do I tame my new guinea pig?!?

I have owned two guinea pigs before who were both very tame. One even used to stand of his back legs to be picked up and would squeak until he was taken out of his indoor cage for a cuddle! Sadly he died it took a while but i just needed another companion. The thing is he's a nutter and scared of EVERYTHING even a sniff! I've had Scampi for over three months now i get him out every day, try and feed him greens with him on my lap but nothing. Every time i enter the room he runs in his house. The only time he comes out is when it dark then he just runs round his cage for hours! I've tried everything but with no luck. Any one any ideas? i know he's still young but my others were tame very quickly does it usually take a while for them to trust you?

It takes a while for some, for others it's quick. Just take it slow and give the little guy some time. He'll come around soon enough. Good luck! =)

When I adopted Bob she was Miss Scaredy Pants - I was sure she was going to have a coronary every time she heard a noise or saw any movement! I couldn't imagine she would ever be calm. After giving her a breather to settle in, I just persevered with the handling. She really needed good sessions a few times a day (and with LOTS of veg, not that she accepted them from me at first as she was too scared) to relax her. Once she could go in with the other pigs she relaxed a whole lot more and followed their lead to explore and generally simmer down, but it was a slow road. She's heaps better now - she needs a lot more reassurance than the others to stay that way, but cuddles are hardly a chore!

Has Scampi got a buddy? Pigs kept on their own are so much more likely to be nervy as it's the company of their own kind that relaxes and reassures them.
