If your dog isn't the type that gets along with small animals don't even attempt to socialize them. That is a very dangerous combination.

my dog has stuffed animals that we call her babies. Early when she got her first "baby" we picked up a few of my stuffed animals and as she went for them we made sure she never touched them and we said, "NO. MY baby, NOT yours, MINE." so when we introduced my dog to my piggy we said, "NO kanga, MY baby, NO" and they get along now. :D

This could be a very dangerous combination, I've heard stories of normally friendly dog attacking and even killing pigs and other small animals. They are still predators and however well they seem to get on I'd never leave them alone, not even for a minute.

My mums dog never paid any real attention to the smaller pets I had as a child. She might look into the cage for a few minutes but otherwise didn't really seem bothered

Bad I idea to introduce a piggy with a dog. My mom and dad have a dog that is old and tame and gentle as anything. He gets along great with kids and does not have much energy to move. But as soon as a piggy is in the air, he becomes a puppy again.

He has 3 piggies under his belt that did not even know what hit them before he killed them. (They were our neighbors kids piggies) And whenever I bring my 2 piggies home he has to be put outside if they are not locked in a bedroom. And the whole time we are there he will not leave the door to the bedroom that they are in.

That is my opinion and experience

I agree with what the others have said, especially if the dog is some kind of terrier. My parents have a Westie who we call Jack the psycho hedgehog killer. They don't let him out in the garden late at night anymore otherwise he'll find a hedgehog that has strayed into the garden and run around with it in his mouth.

When I go over and stay I take my piggies with me and they have to be kept on one of the high units or in a shut room away from him. If he can smell my piggies on me all I get is him sniffing and jumping around me. Dunno why, its like "Duh, there not here!".

My dog and piggie are a sight to be seen. I have a 90 lbs chocolate lab that is too curious for his own good. As soon as I open Temporary's door, his nose is in the cage. I let the two sniff each other, and Brown gets so excited that he can't contain himself. I think he believes Temp is a puppy because he tries so hard to play with her. He paws at her and licks her face. She hates that, and she's even bit his tongue. It was funny to see Brown's reaction even though I know it hurt.

There have been times where Brown actually lies down and lets Temp crawl around him. I know it kills him to behave, but he tends to stay calm.

when i introduced my Kanga (dog) to Kaluha(cavy) Kanga thought Kaluha was a puppy too. Kanga was female and I think that's why she doesn't dare even try to bite Kaluha. First Kanga licked Kaluha's bum (a maturnal instict) then whoever carried Kaluha Kanga followed. When Kaluha climbed into my hood of the my sweater Kanga when nuts trying to find her with a serious face lol. It wa sucha laugh seeing Kanga stick her lil brown nose EVERYWHERE lol. Oh my *sigh laugh*

you should restate the question: how can you get your do to get along with your pig, whichever of the previous advise you follow, just be carefull and dont let them play unsupervised.

Re: Re: how do i get my guinea pig to get along with my dog

I don't know your dogs temperment, curiosity level etc., but I would be super careful. My dog is great with our two cats but the pigs just don't like him that much. He is bassett/counhound and way too curious. When he walks by the cage every now and again, he'll jump up and stick his nose and paws through the cubes, the pigs sniff him and then nip at him. My dog is too hyper for them. When they are not on their cage, he doesn't try to hurt them but, he noses at them and sniffs them and it freaks them out. The pigs are scared of him. He doesn't try to harm them, but, he's just too high strung.
Be careful and never leave them unattended.

Dog and Pig

My parents have a sheltie, and it is the biggest coward of a dog you've ever seen. It runs from EVERYTHING, but when it was with a piggie it had no problems with him. They got along great.

Still, if you don't have a special situation like that- it's probably not a good idea.
