Hi all,

Well, our guinea pig has been with us for almost a week and all is going well. However during floor time I noticed that G.P.'s nails were long and curved-especially the front ones. Is this normal, and if so how should I cut them? I have a pair of cat clippers-will they do? His nails are mostly brown so it will be a bit difficult to see the quick. Any advice most appreciated.

I personally use human nail clippers (they work just as well) cut only where the nail curves a bit, one or two milimeters

yes, you can go out and buy some, they are onyl like four dollars or so, or you could just use some you already have at home. guinealynx has a great link on cutting nails, check that out. basically, you have to trim them down a litttle at a time so you dont cut into the qwik (blood vessel) in the nail. again, have a look at guinealynx, theyll be more descriptive than I am here.

Even when you cut the nails they still looked curved. I use ordinary human nail clippers. To be honest cutting the nails was so much hard work. I put ascot on my lap and then put a towel over his face. I picked up his paw, but he kept on putting it back down again. I petted him for a bit and gave it another go.

I have one with light nails and oe with dark nails. I clip the white nails first so I get an idea of how much to clip.

depends from pig to pig, most say about every 6-9 weeks. but, if you have a brick or a patio in their cage, it might be a lot less.

Thank-you everyone-we did cut his nails and I only took off a bit. I had my hubby hold him on a tennis racquet and his nails showed below the mesh and then I quickly trimmed them. This worked great and I found the idea on pet hub site.

That is an absolutely amazing idea!!! Cujo has white on 3 feet and black nails on one so it is not the easiest, but by doing the white nails first you get a better idea on how much to cut.

If you use a strong bright lamp you can see the quick through the black nails... black nails are a toughy.

Wouldn't a tennis racket hurt their feet. I would be like a wire bottom cage.

thats what i was thinking....wouldnt it really hurt?

i wouldnt trust any advice from petshub - they are notorious for the number of breeders there who "rule" the forums

it only would be for a few minutes, so I think it would be ok. I think it's a great idea, but I like to hold them in my hands and cut. Some take a little more work, but eventually they will sit for it.

of course you have to distract them with treats..!! make sure you don't cut to the pink part where the blood is and u should probably do this once a month..

I've heard they love it when you file their nails, too...
