Up until recently, my town had three, locally owned pet stores. One closed down. The second is owned by a friend of my mother's and the third is absolutely horrendous. This store goes by the name of The World of Fish & Pets but its so terrible that people around town began calling it The World of Death & Doom. I haven't set foot in it for quite some time but during my last visit, it was as dank and dim as ever. The animals were piled in to inadequate living spaces, sickly looking and some rodents/insects were even running loose around the store! Half of the creatures in the fish tanks were dead, which made the place smell awful. In the back room, they have a crate of crickets to sell for frog/lizard owners. This crate is often left open so the crickets hop out and roam all over the store, which is disgusting.

Places like this make me angry beyond measures.

Sounds like you could call the health department on them, as well as the humane society. They may have some good ideas on how to fix this huge problem.

Have you given any thought to doing something about it? If calling the health department isn't realistic, or doesn't pan out, perhaps you could take them info on how to adequately house their animals? Or, better yet, volunteer your time to clean up the cages, living spaces, etc.?

I'd call the local humane society. My husband works for the health department as an environmental health specialist and I don't know about your area, but in ours jurisdiction over something like this would go to the humane society or animal control.

I've always thought that pet stores needed inspections like restaurants do. There needs to be some minimum standard of care and repercussions if those standards are not upheld.

I went to petsmart and saw that there were these guinea pigs and they were boys. So I asked to hold one. I checked to make sure it was a boy and it wasn't. I told my mom and she said something to them. They said that they were sorry and asked if we wanted to buy it. All we bought was a pet collar for my dog. I was SO angry!
