My family and I were going out of state for 8 days around Christmas. I hired Critter sitters which is a privately owned business to come in and care for my animals. When I got home I noticed I could only hear one pig wheek. That is very unusual. My youngest pig "Emmy" was laying down in bad shape. I immediately called the lady and asked her if she had been sick. I asked her what she fed her wanting to see if she had followed my instructions. I needed information quickly to try to get her help or take care of her or what ever she would need. For the 8 days while I was gone this pet sitter fed her no lettuce or veggie of any sort. I had it written in my instructions. My Emmy very quickly died. It was horrible. I know she was in pain.I could feel all her ribs. She was just so tiny. To start out she only weighed a little less than 2lbs.
She never drank out of a water bottle before. (Emmy was around a year old). She got all her fluid from Romaine and veggies. I am sure all the hay and pellets the lady gave her just got hard in her belly. When we got home I picked her up and she weighed nothing. I am just sick. What a horrible way to die. I just can't believe this woman. I filled out one paper each on my pigs. Both papers said give an entire head of romaine every visit. I told her that they don't drink the water in the bottle and that their fluid came from the lettuce.
** The pigs have a water bottle and I change the water but they don't drink from it. I leave it there just in case they might want it.**
She also over filled my electric cat box with 10lbs too much sand. I had to work on it to get it working when I got home also. She ALSO didn't clean up the hay that fell on the floor so the cats ate it and threw up. I had 3 spots of vomit that had to be cleaned.
I am so heart sick. My poor Emmy. My little baby. I thought hiring someone to come in and take care of them would be a good thing. I felt it would be safer than a neighborhood kid. I was so wrong!! I was so,so wrong.
I put this in the Kitchen because it is so horrible. I do want to do a thread in the memory area. I am just so sick over this. I want to put up some pretty pictures and maybe a cute story. I didn't want her memory to be how the pet sitter neglected her and she died.

I am so so sorry to hear about your loss. It is tragic. :weepy:
Is there anyway you could legally go after that sitter? She openly admitted to you not feeding her any veggies. Do you have copies of all the paperwork you filed with her? I would report her! She should NOT be taking care of any animals at all.

I didn't get copies. I am not sure what I can do. I do know I can turn her into post services since its on a military post. If she doesn't have all of her paperwork and certificates currant they will revoke her on post business licence. That would hit her hard since all her customers live on post. I am not paying the bill she sent.

I feel so bad. I hope that the sitter feels guilty and quits her job!

She was cute! I am sorry again. This is such a shame. I would turn her in. Who knows who else on base has pigs, or other animals she does not know how to take care of. Such as birds and reptiles.

I know that it's very upsetting to have a bad experience with a petsitter, and I'm sorry to hear your pig died and that there were some other issues you weren't pleased to come home to.

I do wonder, though, if your pig might have had some issues before you left that you didn't know about. Not feeding a pig vegetables for a week or so isn't going to kill her, especially if she was getting pellets and hay. I also doubt dehydration would be the cause of her death after just a week and a day - if it were, I'd think your other pig would be in far worse shape, as she (he?) would likely have suffered the same effects.

You mentioned her stomach being tight - is it possible she could have eaten (or been fed) something she shouldn't have?

Again, I'm sorry about your pig.

I'm sorry.

If she is a business, she must be registered with the better business bureau? You can file a complaint with them. And see if she is bonded and insured. Most pet sitters must be. You can complain with her insurance I think?

I am so sorry, you must be so devastated. I know exactly how you feel. May Emmy rest in peace, and all of your animals be restored back to normal again. What a tragic experience.

I really want you to report her! Either from the company you hired her from or if you have a lawyer sue her for what you paid her! Your animal died under her care and the rest of your animals were probably bound to die under her care as well. Imagine if someone else hires her for a longer period of time and more animals die. She can't just go around thinking that she did a good job, and she has no reason to have not done a good job. She boldly neglected and killed one of your animals.

For the safety of other animals I really suggest you do anything you can! Where did you find her services? If it was on a site like Kijiji or Craiglist write out a warning Ad about her services. Someone will hear about it and know what to do!

I can't believe you had to go through this, I would be absoloutly heart broken and shaking with rage. I'm so sorry for your loss and I hope you do something to help your heart ache.

That is Awful, what type of pet sitter would not know how to take care of a guinea pig properly. I am really sorry.

I am so very sorry that you had to go through that. Your little baby was so adorable.

I think you should report her. Imagine all the other poor beloved pets that might experience that woman's "care" and what their fates might be. She might lose her business, but she should take care to do more research and follow directions if she wishes to have that kind of livelihood.

Her belly wasn't tight. It was just the only thing I could think of that could have happened. I am guessing she could also have been dropped. I did tell the lady not to pick them up and just to feed and clean. She never did really walk right when I got home. She walked very low to the ground and not very far. She just died so quickly all I can do is guess what happened.
Emmy was always a small pig. Teddy the other pig is a fatso. She is over 2 1/2 lbs where Emmy was under 2lbs. Teddy also knows how to drink out of a water bottle. I don't think Emmy ever knew how. I just can't figure it out.
