Yes, they are "dolls". I am 13 years old. I really REALLY want an American Girl Doll (Marie-Grace!). I already have enough money to buy her.
First off, i only want Marie-Grace to start my collection of AG Dolls that i will hopefully aquire over the years. I do not use the dolls to play "House" and stuff like that.
Am i, honestly, too old for my age to be wanting an American Girl Doll? Im going to a new high school next year and i really dont want to seem like a freak..or "the girl who plays with dolls". :(
so, am i?
PS: i know this is on a gpig forum. But this is the only forum im a member of and i THINK you can post other random things in this thread thing...

Absolutely not too old. My 24 year old daughter has 5 of them she's gotten over the years. They're on a shelf in her closet but she's never stored them away and has no plans of ever parting with them. I think the dolls are gorgeous and are something you'll always cherish. My dad built her furniture like they show in the magazines and she's kept all of it. I'd say, go for it!

You're never too old to have fun :D

If you want it, it doesn't really matter, does it? I don't believe anybody is ever to "old" for something. On the other hand they can be to young for something. If your friends question you about it just tell them it's a collection that may be worth a lot of money someday. Will other kids at your new school make fun of it? That's a chance you take with anything in life and I don't think you should allow that to stop you from purchasing something that will bring you joy. This is easier for me to say because I wouldn't be the one to actually have to live with the teasing (if it even happens):cheerful:. There are a lot of adults that collect all kinds of stuff that others find strange but it makes them happy so I say go for it!

Thanks :) Im going to ask if i can order her today or tomorrow.
Have a nice weekend and thank you for all your advice! :D

Enjoy her! To tell you the truth, I always wanted one, too, when I saw my daughter's dolls.....

I completely agree with what everyone else said ! I love dolls too, and I am 46 years old ! I think there is NOTHING wrong with it at all. I played with dolls until I was 13 years old ( secretly) to be honest. I am not a "girly girl" either..I loved climbing trees, catching small critters ( I always let them go after awhile) riding bikes, playing with box cars in the big sand box in our back yard too. I guess I love it all. Except, I never did get into playing "dress up" though.

You are never to old for dolls. My daughter, who is now 40, has collected dolls all of her life.
Every birthday and Christmas she got a new doll. She is now passing some of her dolls down to her daughter. Even at 3 my grand daughter knows these are show dolls and not be be played with.

Just a note. Demi Moore collects dolls. She bought a house just to keep her dolls in.

Sweetie,

My step father (a 63 year old man) collects legos. He has an entire room full of shelves with legos. You are never too old to enjoy the things that "keep us young," if you want to collect dolls, go for it. I'm 33 and have all of my barbies from when I was a little girl, I still have some in boxes that were never opened. And right on my nightstand is a stuffed rabbit that was given to me by one of my kindergardner's last year.

Exactly. Anything that keeps us young at heart can only be a good thing ! If my 11 year old daughter Sarah enjoyed playing with dolls ( any kind, I love them all...) I would happily play along with her ! She has never really been "into" dolls...which has always kind of stunk for me, for it was a great excuse for me to have fun playing along with her.

Thank you everyone!!
Some of my "friends" were really really rude about me liking the AG Dolls. They are overly-interested in boys and make-up, so they thought it was childish for me to like dolls. Thats why i asked this question. Even my parents said its normal and good for me to like AG dolls at this age too. I havnt been talking to my other friends in a while (the ones who only like boys and make-up) because they were just plain rude -_-
anyway, maybe someone at my new high school will like AG Dolls too! Thanks everyone! And about the person that bought a whole house for her dolls- THATS SO COOL! :)

When my kids were young, my dad built all of his granddaughters dollhouses. They're about 3' tall by 5' long. My mom decorated them with carpet, curtains, wallpaper. My son, who was pretty little, loved playing with it and it really annoyed my daughter because she was afraid he'd break the furniture. So, I asked my dad to build him a fire station to house his emergency vehicle collection. (He loved those 15" or so police cars, fire engines, etc.) My dad even added a pole, to slide down, etc. He got more use out of that than a lot of his other toys. My sister, who has all sons, asked my dad to make her a dollhouse. My point is, things you enjoy shouldn't be dictated by your age or sex. Everyone finds hobbies, items to collect, things they like to do. I can't say anything bad about dolls at all. Make sure you upload a photo when you get her so we can see which one you get.

I hope that you do meet some new friends who share your hobbies/interests :) I know there are a lot of doll collectors out there - it's a huge hobby, with all ages involved. I don't know much about dolls, but am another kind of collector - I collect model horses; I'm 44. People in model horses do shows (both live (in person) & photo (on line, & through the mail) with them, based on breed designation, paint job, collectability, etc., & make elaborate in scale tack & props, with documentation, to show in performance.
I'd enjoy seeing photos of your dolls, also!

I've been thinking about getting one for my daughter. She just turned 9 and hasn't ever really played w/ dolls since she was like 3. She has shown interest in these, but I don't want to waste the money... she has so much stuff... So... I'm still undecided. She hates Barbies... she does like the Liv girls... but the rest, she could care less about.

I'm in my 50s and have recently bought several American Girl dolls. I also have quite a collection of Barbies and some Princess Diana, Princess Catherine, and Prince William dolls. I mostly display them, but I have outfits and can dress them up for different holidays and seasons.

I collect cast iron and aluminum animal nutcrackers. I have over 100 that I've been collecting since the late 70's. I also collect Steiff guinea pigs and other things that are related to guinea pigs. Unfortunately, there are no cast iron guinea pig nutcrackers but there are a lot of squirrels so I guess that's sort of close... ha ha

No way! I use my dolls as a creative outlet in stopmotions, photography, and sewing. If you love dolls, check out girloftheyearstudios channel (age 14, 11,050 subscribers) or stephenswadadancer (age 23, 20,500 subscribers) on Youtube.

I was never into dolls but I was majorly into stuffed animals and model horses, and although I've been able to let go of a few, most of them I've held on to. I have one model horse that is not at all a toy, and cost over $50. Even when I moved out, I brought my stuffed guinea pigs with me :silly: I bought them when I moved to England on my own when I was 18, and I felt lonely. It helped to have something to snuggle :eek:ptimist: I'm 24 and I'm still a sucker for a cute animal face, even if it is plush!

@FuryanGoddess
i personally would wait until she is 10-11. You want to make sure she will take care of a $100 doll. If she still shows no interest, wait even longer until my age (13). If she's already showing mature interests by then (boys, ect.) then i'd say she might not like a AG doll.
for now, you can start to gradually ask her if she would like one. Like say, "Have you ever seen those American Girl Dolls?" ect.
If she does show an excessive amount of interest in them at any time, go ahead and consider getting it for her. But be aware you might be passed down a damaged doll one day. Please watch stephanswodadancers "How To" videos on youtube. You can learn how to properly brush hair, clean skin, tighten limbs, and re-string the doll if anything happens to it.

Hon, if you like them, keep it up.
I knew a woman that collected them, and made doll clothes. I didn't find it weird at all.
I'm 18, and still have my original AGD. Although now her displaying place isn't as prestigious as it used to be.
If it interests you, don't let others discourage it.
