hidey houses

I have a question about hidey houses. I make my own out of cardboard boxes (Fed Ex, pizza, etc). I like them because they have flat tops, unlike pigloos, and my guys like to play 'king of the mountain'. The problem is, I have to make a new box every few weeks because they eat away at it. Eventually, they make themselves a big hole in the roof, or cut down a support beam and when they jump on top it buckles. I don't mind making new boxes, but I'm wondering, should I be careful about the amount of cardboard they eat? They're rediculous chewers. I tried to attach fleece to the top of the box once to see if they'd like the bedding... I had to take it out a few hours later. They were eating it like it was an exotic veggie.

I use small stacking bins turned upside down for hidey houses. The bottom makes a flat roof and the open side of the bin makes a nice open door. They are light enough in weight that my girls like to flip them over, after that there is a floor but no roof! They did the same thing with the cardboard boxes I was using at first. Then the new cardboard floor would get all soggy from them using it for a potty! The bins work much better for me.

I think they are fine. They won't overeat the cardboard and many pigs love to chew on it. Also try toilet paper rolls stuffed with hay.

I use those too. You can generally get 2 at places like Dollar Tree for $1 but at Dollar General, it's $2 for two of them. I have yellow and blue ones. I like the fact they have slots on the sides and back for good ventilation. They are my favorite thing to use for hidey houses, those and small crates that my dad cuts one end out of to make a door. I started out with using cardboard hidey houses but with several pigs, they were going through them like nothing. I still use soda boxes with both ends cut out for tunnels.

I have a tube made out of a quick oats box for one tunnel and a cracker box with the ends cut out for the other tunnel. My piggers seem to think that the way to go anywhere is through the tunnel. It's so funny when they dive into a tunnel to hide only to discover that they went to far and their head is sticking out the other end!

That's great! I don't know why I didn't think of it myself. I was about to buy a Chubble for Percy, but the oatmeal container is free! And free is my favorite price!

Free is my favorite price too! We have to be creative to keep our piggers happy.

My piggies have a outside pen, and we also use cardboard boxes. They eat them, too. I don't think it's too bad for them to eat cardboard, but the ink (If any) could hurt them.

I just came from the local pet shop and a Chube was $9.00! Can you believe it?

For $4, the girls can have the oatmeal canister and the boyfriend can have the oatmeal.

You guys have the best ideas!
