I'm new to guinea pigs and new to this site. First, I'd like to say THANKS to everyone here for helping make this transition into the piggie world! My son decided he wanted to buy a pig with his Christmas money (he's 8) and he has been VERY helpful with taking care of her, but of course I have fallen head over heels in  with her! We bought Sophia at a pet store and I wasn't aware that it's better to have two or more, so I am searching for another girl to keep her company.
I did make her a half C&C cage (2x3) and added a few panels from an existing cage that I had (about another 2x3), with a 1x2 upper eating cafe. Once I added the second 2x3 she went NUTS :D and her personality really came out.
I use fleece with towels as bedding and am so happy with this as I was afraid of "bedding" due to my son's allergies.
I want to make sure I'm doing everything right, so here's where you all come in. She's got pellets (I'm planning on getting better ones online), unlimited hay, water, about 1/2 cup of romaine, red leaf lettuce, and celery morning and night along with 2 baby carrots in the morning. This is what she seems to like. She will also get a few slices of cucumbers and some oranges as a treat. Does it sound like I'm off to a good start?

Welcome! You are off to an excellent start! I have read here that green leaf lettuce is better than romaine and to only feed baby carrots every other day though : )

I'm sure your new little fuzzy would love a friend and perhaps you would consider rescueing one instead of buying one?

Congrats again!

Sounds like you are doing great. :) I also purchased my first pet at a petstore. You should check your local shelters and adopt your next piggy. Read my blog Plump Like A Blueberry as to why adopting is a better choice.

You can also try giving your piggy green bell pepper they are good in vitamin C. My piggies eat Oxbow timothy hay pellets and they love them.

Welcome! So glad you have found the forum. Off to a great start.
Check out all the great info that is here. There is everything you need to have your piggie have a wonderful life. Check out the diet/nutrition threads for a great food chart that has everything listed that they can eat and how often. They need a cup of day of veggies. A couple of everyday veggies are. green peppers, cilantro, red-green letteces. Fruit a couple times a week or as a treat. A tip about the celery. Make sure it is cut up small due to the string threads inside.

We love pictures. Ask all the question you may have or check the search engine. Read the sticky notes on each thread alot of info there. We are here for you.

When it is time to get your new baby a friend. Please adopt. Many a pig from babies to adult need a good come.
Again Welcome!

Thanks everyone! I forgot to mention that she does get cilantro too (nice to see that you guys mentioned it though). I did try red bell peppers and she won't touch them, so I'll try green ones next. I have been looking into local rescues. Sophia is about 4 months old, is it better to get another that is closer in age or does it not really matter? Also, what age is considered "adult" in guinea pig land? Thanks again!

Mrs_Ames: I just read some of your blog. Blueberry is so cute! It seems that with all your attention and love he is thriving and living a WONDERFUL life, despite his "handicaps"! What a great story! Thanks for sharing!:)
