Hi we are new to the guinea pig world and thanks to my daughters and son we now have 3... oh wait make that 4 guinea pigs now, and more on the way! The kids wanted a pet and hubby and I were not on board so we told them that they would have to do research and present the facts to us on everything Cavy. After months of them gathering info and researching right down to how much it would cost weekly, instead of playing they convinced us that they were ready for new pets. We drove 4hours one way to go to a breader who had 3 bonded sisters (one for each child) and then the 4 hours back home. Maple, Butterscotch and Sugar Sparkle are the names the kids chose for the pigs and we were all very excitecd to have them. At first we had a bit of a rough start (found out that they did not like the hay that was recommended) they love orchard hay. fast forward a month and just yesterday Maple started making a wierd noise and then my daughter came running into my room crying that something was wrong with Maple. I went to go check and low and behold Maple had a baby!:eek:hmy: We were shocked because we never once felt the baby! Well then we jumped on line and started doing the mad dash research on babies and to confirm on how to check the sexs of the other 2 pigs. Well they are all girls and Sugar is pregnant aswell ! Butter has had to be removed from the others because she has all of a sudden become agressive and we are wondering if it is to do with the fact that she is the only one not expecting that we can tell. Hubby and I are having a hard time with all of this becasue we did not sign up for more pigs (that is why we drove so far to get pigs from a breader who had thier pigs seporated at 3 weeks so we would not have babies to deal with) Also the kids are getting so attached already ... but there is such thing as too many right???

Oh my! I'd be calling that breeder and giving them a ear full! I'm new too, so I think I'll let the experts tell you the best way to handle what to do about the piggies. As far as the kids go, if you're set on selling/adopting out the babies, I'd just tell them," I know you love them, but we just can't keep them". Maybe some of their friends have a good home. Talk the parents and explain the responsiblity of guinea pigs, then see if they might want a pet.

Beyond what you can financially, or physically keep up with is too much. Meaning you and may be your partner. Have fun with the babies they will very cute and small. Be sure to be ready for baby proofing the cage. Good luck!

Wow.. What a surprise! I would give that breeder an ear full too, lol. That's funny b/c my daughter just asked me the other day if her pig could be pregnant, we have all girls but we were watching you tube videos about baby pigs just for fun. I told her that she can't be pregnant b/c they are all girls.. And she says "She could have been pregnant when we got her". Lol. Well, the best of luck to you with your new little babies!

I am actually sort of a kid myself.... I am 13 years old, I was wondering..... how old are your kids?
We had one guinea pig and after a while we got another one, we breaded them. They had four babies so then we had six pigs and my mother said "We need to sell some of the guinea pigs". I was upset/sad at first but after a while I though to myself "If they go to a good home they could have everything I gave them and more!". I just tried to think positive instead of negative... it really does help :)

Are you absolutely positive of the Butterscotch's gender? It sounds like you are, but other than that I don't know why your other two would have gotten pregnant. Maybe the breeder you got them from might not have accurately separated males and females? Make sure to separate male babies from the mother when they're old enough. If you can't or don't want to take care of the babies, definitely make sure they go to a good home who knows how to care for them. Your kids will hopefully understand :)

CavyLover001 I'm not sure if you deliberately bred your guinea pigs? If you did, that is never recommended.

Trust me I didn't purposely breed them.... we didn't want more pigs in the first place
