Help me decide on a dog breed :)

Hey everyone. I really trust everyone's opinion here so I'd like to ask y'all what type of dog breed you think my fiance and I should get. It won't be for a while. And when I say "breed" please don't think that means I'll go to a breeder.

We are going to be living in an apartment so nothing too big. No long hair. I don't think a terrier would be good because they like to bark. I think a laid back dog would fit our personalities. I thought a doberman would be cool, but they consider them vicious *eye roll* so I can't get one.

Any suggestions? Thanks for reading! :)

German shepard. I say this because being the only breed of dog I know.

I say get a mutt!

Poodle. Very intelligent and not too big.

A Rhodesian Ridgeback or a Labrador Retriever :) Border Collies are very intelligent but get destructive if bored. Or maybe a Shar-Pei. Their wrinkles are adorable but they can have problems with their eyes.

If you are going/are living in an apartment then I would get a toy breed or a small dog. You could look on www.dogfinder.com and find a dog for your needs (it will ask what kind of personality you are looking for in a dog you need to look around for it. I'm not saying you should buy a dog from it because you would be buying from breeders but you could find out what might be best.

I live in an apartment and my husband and I adopted a Husky, Chihauhua mix, yep, a Huskihauhua, lol, and he's perfect. Aren't terriers known for chasing rodents, and small animals? I believe this is what they were bred for.

Definetily find a mutt.

Mutts are the greatest :) I love my mutt. You can find TONS of adorable mixes and mutts at the pound or SPCA. Also Terriers do like barking but when they do you can train them to not bark as much. If you wanted a purebred I would reccomend a cairn terrier. I have one named Nicky :) Also some other good breeds are Rat terriers and mini poodles can be pretty nice. Also Tea cup yorkees :)

Also If you want a purebred try looking for a breed on puppyfinder.com

Adopt from a rescue, you will have lots of choices of size, color
and breed mixtures. Mixed dogs are now believed by many experts, including some vets to be far healthier than the many "purebreds" that have been so seriously inbred. Watch a dog show or look thru a breed book to see what you like and then check the personality types. Remember there are lots of adult dogs that need homes that won't have to go thru all the "troublesome" puppy stages.

Try this website. Just fill out the questions and it will tell you which breed best suits you. Then find a rescue and give a poor dog a new lease on life...many rescues have puppies too.

And if you're willing to get an older dog, or one that's an adult at least, they are great! Mine is estimated to be one or two years old, and he was already housetrained, knew how to sit, doesn't tear up the house, so it was likely that someone else has worked with him before to teach him these things.

Believe me, I know the troubles of a pure bred. Our family has had nothing but mixes until a year ago we got a Bull Terrier. She was born without a place for her kneecap to sit, had one surgery for it which the vet did wrong so we might have it done again. She was having constant UTI for a few months. She has allergies that makes her lick her paws a lot. She almost died a few months ago because as it turns out she has Addison's disease. I think bullies are just prone to more problems then maybe other breeds.

I asked for breeds because I wanted a general idea. Ya know, like if a dog was a mix of "a" and "b" and I knew "a" was a good breed, then maybe the dog would have a lot of that trait. Am I making sense? And of course I would go to a shelter or, if we choose a pure bred, a rescue.

Thanks for all the input! :D

Well...we have a peekapoo and he has been the best dog. Very well behaved and for the first few years he hardly ever barked. Then my hubby started working at home and had fedex/ups at our house at least once a week and he barks like crazy now. Anyhow, he is small and very well mannered, very healthy and great companion. We love him to pieces.

I think beagles are great dogs to own.

A Miniature Poodle would work if you don't mind grooming and reguler brushing. No shedding, smaller size, doesn't require lots of exercise, smart and fun!

Or just check your local shelter for a small, shorthaired breed. Once you pick a breed you could adopt an adult purebred from the breed rescue.

Or maybe a Miniature Pinscher. Botson Terriers make GREAT pets!

BTW, not all Terriers bark. They can easily be trained not to bark.

NewGPMom; A Peekapoo is a 'designer dog', in other words an overpriced mutt sold by puppy millers or BYBs which should never be bred at all. Do NOT buy these 'designer dogs' ever! By doing so your adding to the pet overpopulation problem and paying for hundreds of other dogs to live solitary, neglected and abused lives dieing lonely, starved and painfully.

You also get a dog full to his nose with health problems and genetic defects leaving you with a $5,000 vet bill and a stiff pooch.

I have a wonderful Sheltie mix.. she is 2 years old and is a pretty small dog, very fluffy but doesn't shed! I call her my little werewolf. She was a rescue dog and I've had her for about 5 months or so.. She is a great companion, good with kids and when my piggies have their floortime she is great with them though a little jealous when I hold them. I know she wont hurt the piggies cause I leave them in their pool and the most she has ever done was lick and groom them in there and once when one of my piggies got loose she had all day to hurt it and she didn't. Shelties are very smart and were orginally bred as herders I think. I just find that shelter dogs are just the most grateful. Her little eyes light up when I get home from work.

Wheekwheek

Just wondering... why is a mutt better to a purebred? Is it because a purebred might be more prone to health problems or something?

I have a dalmatian and she's the cuddliest thing I know. She is the most affection being in the house - and that's out of 21 animals. She's always coming up to be nudging me to pet her or let her sit on my lap. She is my best mate :) I've heard dalmatians can be agressive - not this one. She can be wary of other dogs, but as you learn to understand your own dogs behaviour - I know she is only wanting to protect us. My nan has a Lhasa Apso who was dumped :-( She is now the happiest little bundle of fluff ever and she's my lovely mate too. I've heard they can be wary of strangers - but in seeing a stranger she would jump on them and start licking their face like crazy! We didn't choose to have purebreed dogs - that's just how things worked out! I couldn't be more happier sharing my life with the pair of them. They are great.

Here's a few pics for you to enjoy hehehe!
