I am posting from my phone right now so please excuse any awful spelling. We lost power last night and it does not look like it will be on soon.

Its cold here. I am very worried about keeping my pigs warm. What can I do?

Could I get hand warmers and wrap them in socks?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Put a blanket over their cage to keep the heat in, and make sure they've got something inside to snuggle in. They'll do much better in the cold than they would in the heat. so unless you've got skinnies, there's probably no problem.

If it drops below about 55 degrees in the house, then you may have to put them in a smaller space to keep them warm -- something like a big storage bin, and drape it all around with quilts or blankets.

Ok. The cage is covered. But the temperature is dropping fast. Would it be a bad idea to put hand warmers under my fleece in there houses?

The pigs and the fish seem very unhappy :(

What are the hand warmers made of?

They are you cloth. And have carbon and something else in them. I have a few layers of fleece and towels under each house. I was thinking I would put one in the middle of the layers. That way they can't get to them.

What's the temperature in the house?

I just went through the same situation with my pigs last month. I did exactly as bpatters said, I covered the cage and made hideys out of towels. The temp in my house went down to abt 45 degrees and I just used extra blankets to cover the cage. Just make they have ventilation.

Hope the power comes back soon. I understand how worried you must be! Keep us posted!

You can put a hot water bottle in there with very hot, but not boiling water. Wrap it up in a towel so they can't get to it. When I lost power, I put them on regular bedding instead of fleece since the bedding is more insulating than fleece is. I put them into smaller cages with pigloos inside. I put a sheet over the cage and my down coats over the cage, leaving an opening so they had enough air. The temp got really low in the house, but they stayed warm. Since then, I invested in hot water bottles in case it happens again.

Whew! Powers back, 12 hours earlier than expected!

It got down to around 45 Degrees. I did use the hand warmers (stove is electric so we had no hot water!) They worked really well, Just had to make sure they were kept away from piggy mouths!

The boys are out and about now, though it is still pretty chilly in here!

Kevin (the new pig) seems pretty worried. I can't blame him, poor guy.

Thank you all for the help!
