There is a petstore in my neighborhood it is locally owned and there is only one there is not a large chain of them. They treat their piggies horribly and I can't stand it. They never get any baby piggies except maybe once a year mostly really old piggies that people don't want any more. The piggies are sick and have fungal infections and mites. I know this because I rescued two from there I kept one and found a home for the other. We don't have animal control, so I called the police. They said they don't handle small animal cases so I called the nearest shelter they don't even take in piggies unless someone drops them off. There are no piggy rescues even remotly near where I live. What should I do? I sent them one of those complaint letters that I found on the internet it didn't help. They house their piggies with these really gigantic rabbits I had never seen that kind of rabbit before. (I always had netherland dwarfs tiny rabbits.) And the keep them on wire bottom cages. They don't even know what sex they are. And they are very sick. Oh ya they also have bumble foot. The petstore is jsut gross they have so manay hamsters they are overflowing and they have these huge snakes. There has been horror stories about what they feed these snakes.. I just can't stand the thought of those piggies living there one more day. They feed them rabbit food and they don't get veggies. I don't know what to do??? Does any one have any ideas?? Please help I want to do something for those piggies.

You can organize a campaign to stop the store from selling live animals. As for complaints, take it up with your local shelter. They usually have agents that can handle animal cruelty cases, which this is like. Publicize this store's inadequacy, and talk with the store's manager about it. If they refuse to bring up their standards, keep going! It's great you want to do something about this, and good luck on your efforts! =)

I have told every one I know not to buy anything from that petstore, and I have told them how bad it is. They have been spreading the word for me but it isn't making a difference because the piggies are still there.

Have you tried an agent from a humane society? Talking with the manager? You've gotta keep trying, you'll succeed eventually. Try a campaign. That'll scare the stupid store! Post signs in nearby shops' windows... good luck and keep going!!! =)

talk to manager/owner

I am going to go there tonight if I am not to busy. I am going to talk to the manager/owner. Part of the problem is that they have teenagers and older people that know nothing about animals working there. Even if I can get them to quit selling live animals, what about the animals that are already there, all those hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, dogs/puppies, mice, reptiles(they sell alligaters), and birds. I know that there is no way the petstore will take all those animals to the vet. I guess I could try and get a hold of the State Animal Shelter. I wish we had an ASPCA where I live or something.

Sounds good. Where do you live? I could help you look for a shelter/rescue. There's gotta be one by you. Good luck tonight! =)

I was looking online and there is a rabbit rescue in a town near by I will call them and see If they will come and get the rabbits, Or something like that. If they see how bad the rabbits are then maybe they can contact someone and get someone to do something about the other animals.

That's great! =) Try looking here for a cavy rescue: (broken link removed).

Thanks I just found a Humaine Society about an hour away from where I live (I used petfinder.com in the humaine society locater page). Just called(I have DSL) they said they handle cruelty cases I have to get them some more info about the petstore and stuff. I will try and see if the manager will listen to me first, then if he doesn't I have a back up plan. hehehe!!!
I will keep you posted on how it goes...

Nope no cavy rescues even in my state hopefully the Humaine Society I found will be able to help.

ok, it's good you found one. sorry that didn't help.

Media

Maybe you could get the media involved with this. I know where I live, the local news has this thing called the troubleshooter. You send in a complaint about stuff like this and they send some one from the news channel to investigate. They usualy put the report on the news and on their website to help get peoples awarenes of the problem. Maybe there is something like that where you live?

Heres the website to the troubleshooter in my neighborhood, so you get an idea of what I mean:

Hope that helps. Good luck.

I talked to the manager he said that he had no idea that he was doing anything wrong he said he heard it was fine to house guinea pigs and rabbits together.... I told him to get them away from the rabbits and feed them the right food etc. He told me he has no idea how to care for guinea pigs

So I told him I would help him out the next day before he opened- we put the guinea pigs in a big koi pond type of thing (it was the only thing he had) and put carefresh down (i made him open a big bag) the pond type of thing is 3ft high and 5 ft long and 3ft wide. I brought some of my piggy food and put in there. I separated the girls from boys put card board down the middle. It wasn't hard to sex them because they were all grown up. I brought some veggies. I was late for an appointment so I had to go, but I told him I would be back. He didn't look very happy about that. I probably still going to call the Humaine Society and turn him in for animal cruelity but atleast the piggies have a good place to stay for now.

The petstore owner sells ivermectim I know they (the piggies) have mites because their skin is pink and they have hair loss, scratching , etc. Should I treat them with ivermectim, or just let the Humaine Society deal with it? What do you do if the piggies have vitamin deficencies? The owner has been very helpful propably because he knows I will turn him in.

I don't know if I would treat them just yet, as I would leave that up to an experienced vet. That's just me, though. About the vitamin deficiency, you can try giving them 1 cc each piggy of this mixture, recommended to me by a vet.

Crush one 250 mg vitamin c tablet
Add 8 cc water
Give 1 cc per piggy daily

I give this to them on their morning veggies. That way, I know they are getting it. Good luck with them!

The only reason I asked about the ivermectim is because the Humaine Society said it may take a while to investigat because they get tons of calls everyday.I would gladly take them to the vet but I dont have that kind of money to spend on piggies that I dont own.

Wow! Good on you for helping the owner and the pigs. Its great that you took some of your time to sort things out!
