Hello everyone, I am Krystal, from Michigan (currently residing in Metro Detroit area).

I had Cavies as a child and am interested in learning about them again to hopefully adopt in the future. I really think they are very neat critters and the individuals I had the pleasure to share my life with in my youth were such lovely companions.

I do not currently have any Cavies, though I do have other pets whom I love and adore. We have 2 Chinese Cresteds (1 hairless, 1 powder puff) and 4 rats (2 hairless, 2 dumbo). I have always loved hairless mammals since I was a little tyke, so of course hairless cavies tend to be my favorites, though I love all the furry darlings too, especially the Teddy variety.

I have not been a member at a Cavy forum before, but I'm interested in learning more about Cavies again and wanted to join one. In the rules it states "The forum isn't here to have fun and share stories about guinea pigs.", which is actually more of what I was originally looking for, but I'd still like to be a member to learn as much as I can about Cavies from you all so that I will be educated before I adopt. =}

I'm not very good at introductions, so I suppose if you would like to know any thing in particular, feel free to ask. Thank you for reading, it's a pleasure to be here! =D

Hello! The first purpose of this forum is to educate. However, one of the best ways to educate is through experience. So that purpose tends to be fulfilled with stories and pictures of these adorable little creatures!

It is wonderful that you are doing all your research prior to getting your piggies! I feel like well over half the members here made the mistake of falling in love at the pet store and figuring they'll learn the ins and outs later (myself included). This site is VERY helpful! Make sure you read all the stickies on each subforum, they are quite helpful!

Hi and Welcome.

"The forum isn't here to have fun and share stories about guinea pigs.", which is actually more of what I was originally looking for,
The main purpose is caging, caring for them properly and animal welfare but you can still have fun and share stories about your pigs (when/if you get some).

Hello there CrestedLove, WELCOME ! I am very new too and I live in BRRrrrrRR Wisconsin ! I would like to implore you to read read all the aspects that this top-notch forum as well...It is well thought out, organized and up to date on the proper care needed for obtaining optimal care and understanding for, these precious, little animals. I just wanted to say welcome, give you a smile...and say hello ! Make your decision carefully....and evaluate truthfully, what your "expectations" are for purchasing a guinea or two...In the short time that I have had mine I have to consistently remind myself that they will NEVER respond the way a cat or dog would...because they are "prey animals" it is a whole different mindset.....and since they are absolutely terrified that anything and anyone will try to eat them...so earning their trust, comes slowly...gradually...with most piggies. Then once you have their trust...they share their own cute little ways of loving you back, but most do love you back and their sweet affections will melt your heart to pieces..and then make you laugh with joy at their silly antic's !! Let us know what you decide soon, OK ? Thanks ! K

Welcome from a fellow crested owner. I have a powderpuff as well. Love him, but very strange dog.

Welcome! This is a great place to learn about cavy care. Be sure to read the stickies at the top of each section and especially the nutrition section.

Thank you for adopting rather than purchasing. Hopefully a couple of cavies will be very lucky to find a home with you. :) And if you do get a few make sure to post pics! We LOVE to see pics.

It is very nice to meet all of you, thank you very much for the warm welcome! =D
Nice to meet another Crestie owner too; they sure can be silly little devils, I agree. =P

I am glad I found a forum that has so much useful and accurate information all in one place! ^_^

Duly noted about the helpful stickies. I look forward to learning as much as I can about piggies, and I'll be sure to post if and when I am blessed with piggies of my own in the future. =}

Horray another MI friend!
Welcome! I hope you learn as much as you can from here! It is such a great site! I know when I was first researching piggy care I was overwhelmed at times! I started by going through the topics and if I though of a question trying to search for it here and on Gunealynx(another great site for guinea pig information).
I'm from the Downriver area so if you do look to adopt and have questions feel free to ask!

Welcome!
I LOVE Chinese Cresteds! I fell in love with a little family of them at a shelter I volunteer at, they are definitely little sweethearts.
I also think it's admirable that you are doing research before getting an animal. :)

Welcome! I had a friend growing up who had a Chinese Crested dog (hairless) and they are just the crazy-cutest little dogs. Freakishly warm to the touch and super friendly!

This is the best source of guinea pig care info on the web (except for Guinealynx, which is a tremendous source of medical info), so you'll learn a ton!

Thank you everyone! I've been busy reading up, I'm glad to have found a good source for information all in one place. ^_^

I'm from Petoskey, but I currently live in Downriver area also. =}

Yes, I've always loved the Crestie breed, and all hairless pets (mammals) I've ever seen, really. My two I have now are my first Cresties, but they are my babies and I adore them and am so glad I finally get to have them as part of my family. <3

Sorry for double posting everyone, but I can't figure out how to edit my first post in the thread to change it to "About Me & My Piggie", so I thought I would add a link to his pictures here. =}

He is in a smaller enclosure right now as he gets used to things here. He was born December 8th, 2010. We made a 5 hour trip to go get him. It was only supposed to be a 3 hour trip, but the weather was awful and our GPS was sending us on a wild goose chase trying to find the place! Haha. He came with the name Dobby, so I think I will keep it as his name. It seems like a fitting name, considering his lovely large ears. =D I'm not sure if his old owner is a member here at the forums or not. Dobby was housed alone, but we are looking into getting a friend for him. =]

Dobby is really cute.

I love rats especially hairless ones. I had two a few years back their names were Ella and Bella. I found them on petfinder they were the best!

Welcome and good luck with finding Dobby a friend!

Thank you for complimenting him. Perhaps he'll be glad to hear he has another fan. ^_^ I adore him already, but he'll take a bit to get used to us I should imagine. =}

Oh definitely, rats have always been among my very favorite companions/pets (ferrets also). Especially hairless dumbos. ^w^ Our elderly boy Gremlin Houdini (black Berkshire hairless dumbo) passed away last month. We had him for several years, he was just over 4 years old when he passed away. We had him since he was a tiny pup and he was the sweetest of pals. We sure do miss him. <3 Rest in Peace, Gremmer-Kinnz; January 1st, 2007 to January 19th, 2011. <:3(-)~~

Thank you for the good luck, also. =3

Wells, just thought I'd give a little update. The C&C cage is complete. It's only 37" x 35", according to the tape measure, but I plan on making a second level for them to add additional space. =}

They are not very fond of using ramps however, even though I put them at appropriate angles, so I'm still brain storming on how to get them used to using them. ^^;

Oh, and you might have noticed I said "they". Dobby has a friend now, only about a month older than him (approximately), Kippert! Kippert recently had a clean bill of health from the vet, and they are doing very well together. They are pretty much the best of friends. It is somewhat amusing how Dobby is smaller than Kip, but Dobby is the dominant one. =P They love to snuggle, share their yums, and roam around together. ^w^

This is a picture of them we took the very first time they met each other. I edited it for Valentine's Day, as you can see. <3

Welcome and congrats! They are so adorable!

I'm from Grand Rapids! Looks like we get a little break from the frigid temps this week! I'll take 40 degrees over 16 any day! :D

Hello CrestedLove, I am also a newbie and located in Grand Rapids like Stef41. I have found this site very useful and have already changed my feeding style/habbits for my little guys that I've only had for a couple of weeks. I look foward to continuing my cavy education through this forum. Good luck with your new piggies as well!!
