I have been a piggie owner for about 8 months thanks to my friend who gave me one for xmas, we now have 4 and they are adorable. I never realised how loving these creatures are.

Anyway, to all those in Oz, lets share tips and stuff that may be different to other countries.

Hey! I am from Sydney, Australia. I have been a piggy owner for about the same time you have. I have been at this site for about a month I think. They are really strict with their beliefs here, but I have learned a lot.

hi alanas thanks for your reply. They do seem strict here but mostly they really do care about their animals which is fantastic. i feel the age group of fairly young but its good they are so caring at a young age.

Yeah it is great that everyone on here really cares, there are things that are different in Australia though, like the names of things, product names etc, another thing is that our temperature doesn't vary very much compared to many other countries, many people are against having cavies outside "Mine are inside but that is because I have a dog. I live in Sydney and it doesn't get very cold here. Our animal laws are much tougher here too.

I guess there are a few of us from Sydney then. :D

My girlfriend and I have two adorable guinea pigs of the long hair variety. We have recently constructed a new cage for them which can be either inside or outside on the grass. We have also some up with a simple grass feeder which is simply a toliet roll stuffued with long grass like a lolly-pop which we poke in the side of their cage.

This is a great forum guys, keep up the fantastic work, hope get to know you all better in the future.

:)

Happy first post, PiggyMulla!
I actually think that your animal laws are pretty cool in NSW! In Queensland, we can't own rabbits or ferrets!

That is such a cute feeding toy! So simple too. I will have to try that. Who's lawn should I cut grass from next? lol there are a couple of neighbours who leave their edges long because they know I have a lot of piggies, I swear the other neighbours who don't know me must think I am crazy walking around with a pair or scissors and a bunch of grass and cutting grass from other peoples lawns. I have a great veggie patch growing for my piggies. I will have to post some pictures of my veggie patch. It is hardly any maintenence and it saves me a lot.

A veggie patch, now that is a good idea!! We might have to get the shovel out this weekend and start a smorgasbord of our own! With our Toilet roll feeder, we put a small notch about an inch in from one end so when we poke it though the square hole in our cage it stays securely in there.
The other treat feeder we have is an everyday metal skewer which we put pieces of food on (watermelon for instance) and it has a cork on the end with a key ring on the other end. This hangs from the top and they can eat off it as they please. But the veggie patch sounds great!

I don't know how you guys go with supermarket food, but my piggies eat about 1/3 or it which is mainly the the pellets and grassy bits, the seeds, especially the red ones they leave. I am currently on a hunt for some good cavy food. One that is good is Blacktown Pet Food and Produce. They have the foods seperate and you pix your own, so they will have a tub of grass, a tub of pellets etc, and then you weigh it and go on your way. If that is out of your area or youi don't have much time on your hands you can go to

(broken link removed)

If I find anymore I will post them, I will hopefully get to try a few out and then I might grade them on cost, quality, whether the pigies like it etc.

This is my piggies veggie patch! The chillies are there to keep cats away. I like having a veggie patch because is is economical, and I know that it is free from pestisides or anything else harmful to them. It is low maintenance and it gives my piggies a lot of variety. :)

How dumb! I posted the same pic twice. Heres the other one.
